Social Media and Online Community Posts From Around The Web

Every Friday I post links to a few of the blog posts that I read during the week that I found interesting and insightful.

Included in this week?s round-up are posts that discuss the graying of social media users; a hard look at the value of a Facebook fan; the value of testimonials in an online community; and how small businesses can use Facebook?s ?Recommend This Place? feature.

Pew Study Looks At Many Aspects Of Social Networking Influence

If this is truly a trend that the older segments of society are becoming more engaged in social media and, for some odd reason, the younger generations less involved, the business implications could be huge.

What?s The Value Of A Facebook Fan?

A super-influential fan who doesn?t like or share the content posted on your Facebook Page or site has an effective value of zero. A regular person who shares or likes some content that you posted that gets people back to your website and into your marketing funnel has significantly more value, even if they?re not a social media personality.

The Power of Testimonials in Online Communities

Notice that you?re always answering the question, ?What?s in it for me?? ? that?s all the potential member cares about when they are deciding whether or not to join your community.

How Businesses Can Use Facebook?s ?Recommend This Place? to Gain Exposure and Likes

Recommend This Place appears in the right sidebar of Pages to users who live nearby that business. It allows users to write a short recommendation of the business which is then published to the news feed and shown to their friends when they visit the Page.
