Does your child need a big expensive kids birthday party to be happy?

Does your child need a big expensive kids birthday party to be happy?

Earlier this year, TLC explored this topic on their show Outrageous Kid Parties.

The four-part series was all about parents who go overboard on their kids birthday party and spend a fortune on the celebration. In one episode, the cake alone was $2,100. One kids party spotlighted cost more than an average wedding.

Clearly, for some moms, dads and kids, hosting the average kids birthday party is over (i.e., featuring a sheet cake, games and perhaps a jumpy house, clown or magician).

According to TLC, the show documents parents as they go beyond their means to give their child a huge eye popping, jaw dropping kids birthday party. With high expectations, they force other family members, friends and kids party planners to go to extreme measures to ensure that their fabulous kids party goes down in history as an event never to be forgotten.

Check out this video excerpt and you?ll see what I mean. (Warning: Don?t fall off your chair.)

The show, aimed at shocking viewers, left many questioning the sanity of some parents when it comes to their kids birthday parties.

Maureen Cairns of the Philadelphia Examiner raised a great question about kids party ideas. When it comes to a kids birthday party, ?who are these parties for the children or the parents??

Perhaps some parents have blinders on alludes New York Post TV critic Linda Stasi who commented that ?there are still revolting people who haven?t gotten the memo and don?t know that conspicuous consumption in these times encourages conspicuous contempt.?

Victoria Leigh Miller, a freelance writer and mother of three children who has been writing about parenting topics since 2001 questions whatever happened to the good old fashioned home kids party? ?Party venues have popped up all over the place for parents who don?t want to host their children?s birthday festivities at home,? says Miller. ?With everything from moonbounce venues to beauty salons that cater to little girls, there?s something for everyone. Even the local movie theater or karate school likely has a birthday party option.?

But Miller warns that even these types of kids parties ?can quickly approach the $1,000 mark if parents aren?t careful. Per-person charges and kids party favor add-ons can make the total skyrocket.?

Cairns agrees. ?So many people seem to feel that their young children have to have their party at an outside venue,? for example. ?Why? Do people feel the need to outdo their neighbors?

For Cairns, a stay-at-home mother of three, she firmly believes when it comes to your child, ?cake, ice cream, presents and friends are enough for their joy to shine through.?
