Henrico cheerleading coach found guilty of sex crimes

HENRICO, VA (WWBT)- A judge found a Henrico cheerleading coach guilty on 11 of 13 charges Thursday, stemming from inappropriate sexual relationships with minors.

33-year-old Maurice "Moe" Jerralds will be sentenced September 12. His bond was revoked and he was taken into police custody.

Defense attorneys for a former Henrico cheerleading coach put their client on the stand earlier Thursday, before resting their case. However, Jerralds repeated denials of the accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct with five underage female students over a ten year time period beginning in early 2000 ultimately did not clear his name.

Jerralds admitted that he did have a relationship, which his attorneys called a "romance," with the oldest accuser, who was 16 at the time. However he said he only kissed her twice, and refuted her testimony of sexual encounters.

Two alleged victims took the stand Tuesday, describing drinking, sex, and inappropriate gifts from the coach. One claimed multiple intimate meetings at USA All-Stars gym in Henrico's West End.

Defense attorneys called witnesses who claimed students were never alone in the gym with a coach for private lessons. The defense argues the five alleged victims are bitter and have a vendetta against Jerralds because they had a crush on him and he had a girlfriend.

Jerralds faced similar charges in 2001 but was acquitted.

The 13 felony counts?include sexual aggravated battery.
