Leave a Comment - Comfort Keepers Franchise

What motivates an individual to purchase their own business? Is it the life-changing experience of becoming your own boss, or perhaps the potential financial benefits of owning a successful business? For many entrepreneurs these two factors may have lead them to begin their own business, but for Kelly Marrero the decision to become a Comfort Keepers? franchise owner was a much more personal one.

Not too long ago, Kelly?s mother was unable to safely live on her own and was placed into a nursing home that Kelley thought she could trust with her mother?s health ? she was wrong. Within three weeks her health declined, eventually leading to a stroke. The staff at the nursing home made little effort to improve her mother?s condition and soon after her stroke, Kelly?s mother passed away.

?With one, maybe two nurses per 10-12 seniors, seniors are given hardly any attention by nurses who don?t seem to even care,? said Kelly, ?I feel that the elderly deserve to be treated with more respect and dignity to live safely in the comfort of their own home.?

This difficult experience not only opened her eyes to the potential risks of a nursing home, but to a field in which she could make a real difference by providing quality in-home care to those who need it? ?which is something that Comfort Keepers is known for. Witnessing first-hand the impact that living in a nursing home can have on a senior?s health was enough for Kelly to make her final decision in purchasing a Comfort Keepers franchise.

?In order to have a fighting chance, you almost have to buy into a franchise model,? explained Kelly. ?You are given ongoing support and training, competition is limited, and there is a much higher likelihood of success than starting your own business from the ground up.?

Along with ongoing support from CK Franchising Inc., Kelly has experienced an overwhelming amount of support from the surrounding Comfort Keepers offices in New Jersey. ?They welcomed me with open arms and provided our office with anything and everything we needed,? Kelly said. Because of her recent purchase in Atlantic County, New Jersey, Comfort Keepers now has 23 offices in New Jersey providing compassionate, loving in-home care. Her offices are in the southeast part of the state, servicing Atlantic City, Pomona, Woodbine, Dennisville, Cape May, and other local communities in Atlantic County and Cape May County. In only two weeks, Kelly is proud to say that she is already providing full-time in-home care for several clients in New Jersey.

Ex-football player dies in accidental shooting

STAMFORD -- Marcus Dixon was homeless as a young teenager. He was in a motorcycle accident as a youth that nearly killed him. His life made a "180-degree turn" after a north Stamford family adopted him at 17. He played football at West Point.

Dixon's dramatic life ended at age 22 Thursday night when he removed the magazine from his .45-caliber Glock pistol, and tried to demonstrate to friends that it was safe by pulling the trigger with the gun pointed at his head.

One round was hidden in the chamber and Dixon fatally shot himself, police said.

"He was the toughest son-of-a-gun I ever coached," former Stamford High School football coach Kevin Jones said. "Part of his background was being a survivor. If there was any question about who you wanted on your side, I would pick Marcus Dixon."

Dixon never knew his biological mother. He told The Advocate four years ago that his father dropped him off in Stamford when he was in seventh grade with the parting words: "Kid, you're on your own now."

He managed to avoid foster homes. While bouncing around from one friend's home to another, he became friends with 15-year-old Lauren McInerney. After her family took a liking to Dixon, Rose and Barry McInerney tracked his father down and legally adopted him. Dixon told The Advocate four years ago that it turned his life around.

Dixon's acceptance to West Point "was probably one of the finest moments of my professional career," Jones said. "For him to go to West Point was such a great turnaround."

Jones, who kept up with his former player through the years, said Dixon played for the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School after graduating from Stamford High School in 2009. He played for the Army team at West Point under the name Marcus McInerney two years ago, but did not play any games, Jones said. Last year, he opted out of the football program to concentrate on academics, Jones said.

Current Stamford High School Head Coach Bryan Hocter said he ran into Dixon at the Stamford Government Center in July while Dixon was taking an exam in hopes of becoming a Stamford police officer.

"He was dressed really nicely, and spoke very well. I told him that I did not recognize him. He said, `Coach, I have grown up and come a long way,'" Hocter said.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, Dixon was showing his gun to two friends in the rear apartment at 785 Stillwater Road, where he moved two weeks ago, police said.

Police Capt. Richard Conklin said Dixon, who obtained his pistol permit in the last six months, could have been under the mistaken impression that the weapon he was holding had a magazine disconnect safety, which makes the gun inoperable when the magazine is removed.

But Conklin said Dixon's pistol did not have that safety feature.

Stamford police Lt. Diedrich Hohn said Dixon was pronounced dead at the scene, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the death.

"There was nothing illegal. It was a tragic accident," Hohn said.

A woman at the home declined to comment on Dixon but acknowledged the incident did happen at the address.

When police and paramedics arrived at the home, two of his friends were performing CPR on Dixon but he could not be resuscitated, Hohn said.

Laura Dembofsky, a senior at University of Connecticut, said several of her current classmates from Stamford gathered Thursday night when they heard about Dixon's death.

"He was friends with everybody. There was not a single person he wouldn't give a chance to be nice to. Regardless of athletics, he was one of the nicest people I've ever met," she said. "Everyone knows he was always smiling and encouraging everybody."

UConn senior Katie Pape, a friend of Dixon's in high school, said Dixon would challenge his friends "to be a better person."

"He could do something so simple as break a smile and brighten your day," Pape said. "He could make you feel better about yourself."

Jones remembered his former team captain as one of the hardest-working players he has encountered during his career.

"Marcus had a lot of rough spots in his life and did not have it easy growing up," said Jones, now a sports agent for JL Sports in Branford. "When he came to us there were a lot of things that we needed to address that had nothing to do with football, but we used football as a way to deal with them. The turnaround that kid made is probably the greatest I have ever seen in my 20 years of coaching."

Jones said Dixon was blessed with a mature body when he was young and had a tremendous work ethic. The team was 5-5 in Dixon's senior year, during which he rushed for 977 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also had 35 tackles on defense.

Stamford High School offensive coordinator Riis Lane said Dixon was "invincible." He recalled that Dixon was in critical condition following a motorcycle accident around eighth grade. Lane said he feared Dixon would not survive the crash.

A year or two later Dixon was playing great football, Lane said.

"On the football field he would take hits and give hits like you would never expect and he would just spring up. He was amazing," Lane said.

Lane, who met Dixon in the eighth grade, said he noticed a big turnaround when he went to live with the McInerneys.

"There was a big difference after he was adopted. He worked on his anger. He was very polite to everybody. If two guys were fighting, instead of taking sides he would try to sit down and talk to them," Lane said.

Hocter recalled sitting with Dixon one day when he pulled out his lunch and showed him all of the food Rose McInerney had packed for him that day. Dixon had five sandwiches and said there was no way he would be able to eat it all, Hocter said.

"Marcus said they were a blessing from heaven. He would say to me `I don't know what I ever did to deserve these people,' " Hocter said.

Former Stamford High School basketball captain Michael Tiscia said Dixon was easy to like.

"He was the type of kid whose smile lit up the entire room," Tiscia said. "He was someone who left a lasting impact on my life. It is tough, it is tough losing someone that just so special."

Dixon was always a pillar of strength on the Stamford team, said Hocter, his former coach.

"He had that wow factor about him when you met him. He was very engaging. But he was a soft-spoken individual. He overcame his issues and became such a fine young man. I have him in mind when I talk to the kids and tell them that they can achieve what ever they want no matter where they come from," Hocter said. "He came from nothing and what he achieved in his life was remarkable."

Four years ago, Marcus reflected on how dramatically his life had changed. "Every day I always thought to myself how unlucky I was," Marcus said. "It used to get me so mad. It just didn't seem fair. But today, it's the exact opposite. I feel so lucky."

Affiliate Marketing Tips That Provide More Power For Your Business ...

In the world of affiliate marketing, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced marketers alike. There are many programs, e-guides, books, videos, and other resources for information. This set of tips contains some of the best advice for helping a good affiliate marketer become a great affiliate marketer.

Part of your job of being an affiliate marketer is to make sure you are receiving credit for every single sale you make. Find out what type of software the company uses to track sales, make sure it is reliable and legitimate. If the sales you are referring are not properly tracked, you will end up losing commissions that are due to you.

Think about branching out once you build up some profile as an affiliate. Taking the next big step in business is important for anyone looking to make a career out of working online. If you build up a reputable brand as an affiliate, you should think about pushing your own products to keep 100% of the profit.

Don?t expect immediate results. While some products will immediately start bringing in sales, others take time. Your return readers will help to build your sales gradually and this in turn, brings you the money from the company you work for. This isn?t an instant turn around, but patience will help it pay off in the end.

Re-invest a proportion of the money you make into growing your business. Many business owners do not take a paycheck from their business for months or possibly even a few years. While this might not fit with your original plans, it will feed the business and allow it to grow, instead of starving it to death.

If you have purchased an affiliate product to test it out, do not rely on text alone to give it a positive review. Break out the video camera, comb your hair, and give a video review of the product ?? how it works, how it helps you, and how it can help them. Allow people to actually see the product.

Choose affiliate marketing categories that you are familiar and comfortable with. If you love books, choose affiliates that sell books. If you would rather get a root canal then pick up a book, you should avoid those affiliates. Familiarization with a category increases your ability to make good choices about ad placement.

When making the leap to have affiliates working for you, it is useful to ensure that the affiliates are able to drive the correct traffic to your site and make the sale. If you are selling home appliances, then it does not make sense to have an affiliate working for you who runs adult websites. Pick and choose your affiliates wisely and have them work for you.

Plan for everything. One reason that many affiliate marketers fail is because they forget to have a back-up in place. A strategy is the most important part of affiliate marketing, as you cannot expect customers to flock to your brand new website. Put some planning and work into it, and customers will soon arrive.

Being patient is a very important skill that is very useful. Affiliate revenue is known to grow steadily over time. Don?t think you are going to make money right from the get go, or get discouraged when that is not the result. Make sure that you have referral links available so that people can see your writing more often.

Isn?t creating your own personal affiliate marketing plan exciting? As you have seen in this article, there are a lot of ways this can be done and no two plans or programs will yield the same results. There are also lots of customizable options that can work with your business and budget.

Beside writing about Affiliate Revenue, Sheryll Timmermann also shares knowledge about ultimate demon training? on her websites. To find out more about it, visit www.warriorforum.com

Spain announces 3 billion euro placement for regions

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Treasury said on Thursday it will issue 3 billion euros ($3.87 billion) through a private placement with Spanish banks aimed at offering struggling regions access to lower borrowing costs through its emergency liquidity fund (FLA).

The operation includes floating-rate notes and bonds due in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in a private placement for September 21 and is the first government issue to finance the FLA, set up to bail out regional authorities shut out of international debt markets.

The Treasury said it had already secured commitments from a group of Spanish banks for the placement which would contribute to the 8-billion-euros loan brought by financial institutions for the fund

The fund will have total fire power of 18 billion euros.

Top banks Santander , BBVA and La Caixa will contribute the lion's share of loans to the liquidity fund, sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

The national lottery - Sociedad Estatal Loterias y Apuestas del Estado SA (SELAE) - also aims to raise 6 billion euros through a syndicated loan with international banks to finance its contribution to the rescue fund.

The remaining 4 billion euros for the fund will come directly from the Treasury.

The regional governments are at the heart of concerns about the country's economy and their ability to tackle budget deficits could play an import role in Spain avoiding a full-blown bailout.

The regions, alongside the struggling banking system, have been hit by a real estate boom and bust which left banks burdened with billions of euros in soured property assets and regions starved of taxes from real estate transactions.

The private placement includes a floating-rate note maturing January 31, 2016, a reissue of an outstanding 3 percent bond due April 30, 2015, a reissue of a 3.25 percent bond due in April 2016 and an outstanding instrument due January 2017.

Pick the Best iPhone 5 Carrier [IPhone]

Pick the Best iPhone 5 CarrierReady to buy the new iPhone? With several wireless carriers to choose from, now's a good time to review their differences. Here's a comparison of your options so you can pick the best plan.

We recently compared the big four wireless providers in general, but now we'll focus on just those who are offering the new iPhone: AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. Two prepaid carriers, Cricket and Virgin Mobile, who currently offer the iPhone 4S may also get the iPhone 5?but probably not any time soon since that hasn't been announced yet. Still, we're including Cricket and Virgin Mobile (both of which run on the Sprint network) below for your future reference. Let's take a look at costs and performance.

Phone Price and Data Rates

In terms of the device itself, the iPhone will cost the same at AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB?with a new two-year contract.

(If Cricket and Virgin Mobile get the iPhone 5, their prices will likely be the same as those offered for the iPhone 4S: for the 16GB model, that's $500 at Cricket and $650 on Virgin Mobile. The prepaid carriers, however, don't require any contract, so there are no early termination fees, and even though you pay more for the phone upfront, the lower plan rates and lack of silly activation fees on Cricket and Virgin Mobile could offset the phone price in the long run. For example, you save about $40 a month on Virgin Mobile for unlimited* everything compared to Sprint; over the course of two years that $480 $960 savings would more than cover the premium price for the phone.)

The data and calling plans vary quite a bit among the providers. AT&T and Verizon have "shared data plans"?a bundle of data to be spread across your devices. This could be cost-effective if you (and your family) use the iPhone with several other devices, but generally they're more expensive than the unlimited data plans on Sprint, Cricket, and Virgin Mobile.

Below are two pricing comparison charts (click to see the charts in their entirety). In essence:

  • Only truly unlimited data iPhone plan: Sprint is the iPhone carrier of choice if you want truly unlimited data?no throttling or caps.
  • Toss up if you're choosing between AT&T or Verizon on price alone: AT&T and Verizon pricing are about the same. AT&T gives you 3GB of data on one iPhone with unlimited talk and text, while Verizon gives you 2GB for $20 less a month. If you add more iPhones or smartphones to your plan, Verizon is $5/month cheaper than AT&T for each additional smartphone.
  • Cheapest minutes plan: Cricket has the cheapest minutes-based calling plans: $25 for 300 minutes of talk, with unlimited* texting and data. Or you can get 1,000 minutes for $35 a month.
  • Cheapest unlimited plan: Virgin Mobile has the best deal for unlimited* everything: $55 a month

Pick the Best iPhone 5 Carrier

On the shared/family plan side, AT&T and Verizon are cheaper than Sprint for just two smartphones up to 4GB on the shared plans ($150 for two smartphones with 4GB shared versus $190 on Sprint). Assuming the iPhone will come to prepaid providers, Virgin Mobile would also come out on top for unlimited* everything for two smartphones?just $110 a month (Cricket doesn't have unlimited data).

Pick the Best iPhone 5 Carrier

*Unlimited in theory, but throttled after a little more than 2GB of usage.

Performance and Coverage

Pricing isn't everything, though. Most important, you want to make sure you get good coverage, call quality, and data performance for your iPhone in your area. To check that out, consult the carriers' coverage maps and sites like SignalMap to find out if you can get a strong and reliable signal. (DeadCellZones and OpenSignalMaps are two other useful resources, but they don't seem to include Cricket or Virgin Mobile. Also note that Cricket's iPhone 4S coverage is only in certain cities, so the iPhone 5 might not be available on Cricket in your area.)

Verizon has the broadest 4G LTE network, with 300 markets across the US and coverage for over 75% of Americans, according to GottaBeMobile. AT&T has fewer than 100 4G LTE markets and Sprint has less than 50, though all of these networks promise to expand their 4G LTE coverage.

Verizon also seems to score best in all the third-party tests for network quality and 4G speeds (J.D. Power named it highest in network quality, PCWorld said it was tops for 4G uploads, and PCMagazine said it was fastest). AT&T fared well for 4G downloads, though, in PCWorld's tests.

Unfortunately, these tests didn't include Cricket or Virgin Mobile for comparison, probably because they're in limited market areas. However, because both services run on Sprint's network, you could look at the Sprint test results to compare (also unfortunately, Sprint doesn't perform too well according to those tests. I can confirm that at least in the NYC suburbs, Virgin Mobile data is horribly slow.)

Other Considerations

Beyond pricing and performance, you should also take into account customer service. In our previous wireless carriers comparison, we found that two studies named Verizon tops for overall customer service (Consumer Reports said AT&T customers were least satisfied).

Finally, one more option you might consider is getting an unlocked iPhone when it becomes available on T-Mobile. This wireless provider is one of the few who aren't getting the iPhone, but unlocked iPhones can run on its network?with many caveats, according to CNET. First, T-Mobile can only accept phones from AT&T, because of wireless spectrum differences with Verizon and Sprint. Second, iPhones will run slower on T-Mobile's network than other 4G smartphones because the iPhone's HSPA+ modem only goes up to 14.4 megabits per second, while T-Mobile is upgrading its 4G network to HSPA+ 42 (with 42 megabits per second speeds). Despite the limitations, T-Mobile would be a good alternative if you're on a budget, especially with the new $90 plans with truly unlimited data ($10 cheaper than Sprint). Unlocked iPhones make sense in certain situations, such as international travel.

The best iPhone 5 carrier for you depends mostly on what kind of coverage and performance you have in your area and how much data you expect to use. Take the above into consideration before you make your decision.

The attack on the Libyan consulate, as it happened

The deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, are a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk in Libya. NBC's Steve Handelsman reports.

By Catherine Chomiak and M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

NBC News compiled this reconstruction of the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, after a briefing from senior U.S. officials, who asked not to be identified and cautioned that it was imprecise because it was based on preliminary field reports:

10 p.m. Tuesday (4 p.m. ET): The compound, a temporary facility with a nearby annex, begins taking fire.

10:15-10:45 p.m.: The attackers enter the compound and begin firing into the main building, setting it on fire. Mission security and Libyan guards respond. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, information management officer Sean Smith and a regional security officer are the only people in the main building at the time. At some point, they become separated because of the heavy smoke. The security officer makes it out safely.

US won't rule out Islamist link in killing of US ambassador to Libya

The security officer and other security personnel return to the burning building to rescue Stevens and Smith. Smith is already dead, and the rescuers pull his body from the building. They can't find Stevens before they are driven from the building by the fire and smoke.?

10:45 p.m.: U.S. security personnel try to take back the main building, but they come under heavy fire and return to the mission annex, where 25 to 30 people are holed up.

11:20 p.m.: U.S. and Libyan security personnel again try to take back the main building, this time successfully. They evacuate the rest of the personnel.?

Tuesday night: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is briefed.

12 midnight: The mission annex comes under fire, which continues for about two hours. Two Americans are killed, and two others are wounded.?

3 a.m. Wednesday (9 p.m. ET Tuesday): The fighting is over, and U.S. and Libyan security forces regain control of the compound.

Romney slams Obama over attacks on US officials in Libya, Egypt

Aftermath: The body of Stevens, who was taken to a Benghazi hospital at an unknown time, is returned to U.S. personnel at the Benghazi airport. A plane arrives from Tripoli to evacuate all personnel back to the capital, including the three wounded and the remains of the four people who were killed. All diplomatic posts are ordered to review their?security.
