WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michele Bachmann's moment came and went. Chris Christie was a no-show. Rick Perry faded. Now folks are waiting for the Herman Cain boomlet to go bust.
Could it be that Republican voters are done speed-dating and ready to go steady with Mitt Romney?
Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and other what-about-me candidates are hoping that the meh-about-Mitt crowd may still be ready to check out someone else.
It's been that kind of year, after all, with first one candidate and then another capturing the party's attention ? for a time.
Remember when Bachmann surged to victory in the Iowa straw poll? When Christie's big tease that he might join the race captivated the party? When Perry still pulsed with Texas swagger?
Why not check out me next? the long-shot candidates reason.
After all, Santorum has been looking tough lately, Gingrich has turned in some thoughtful debate performances, Ron Paul's got a new ad blitz, and Jon Huntsman's pushing hard in New Hampshire.
And Romney, even with a big bump in his favorability ratings of late, still hasn't been able to generate much enthusiasm among GOP voters.
Republican strategist Mark McKinnon thinks GOP voters will "keep on looking right up until prom night."
"They like shopping around and the alternatives to Romney in theory, but when it gets to be more than just about lunch, the voters so far have been disappointed and let down," McKinnon says.
The idea that Republicans may still be willing to look around is what motivates Santorum, Huntsman and other candidates who are polling in the single digits to head out the door each morning to yet another town hall, Rotary club or fundraiser. They're vigorously challenging the top-tier candidates, sniping at President Barack Obama and keeping the debate stages crowded.
"I don't need a poll to tell us that we're moving up," Huntsman enthuses in New Hampshire.
Gingrich, who's kept his focus trained on what he considers Obama's shortcomings, has a new ad offering himself as "the right candidate at just the right time."
Paul is plowing $2 million into early primary state ads that dismiss his GOP rivals as big spenders beholden to Wall Street.
Santorum, whose tough talk has made him stand out in recent debates, is questioning Cain's credentials as a true conservative. And Perry, hoping to regain his stride, has been particularly aggressive in going after Romney in recent debates.
But Cain, whose popularity surged in recent weeks, isn't ready to cede the spotlight ? even if he's been widely dismissed as just the latest "flavor of the month."
Cain's comeback: "Haagen-Dazs black walnut tastes good all the time."
Huntsman, a former Utah governor, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, are the only two GOP candidates who remain unknown to large numbers of Republicans, and that means they've got the widest opening to change opinions.
So it's sort of good news that 53 percent of Republicans don't have an opinion about Huntsman, and 48 percent don't have an opinion about Santorum.
Just about everybody's already got an opinion about Gingrich, by contrast. But the former House speaker has made some headway recently in shifting people from the negative to positive column.
Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, a veteran of multiple presidential campaigns, thinks Cain is destined to fade. The former pizza executive and his 9-9-9 tax plan have been coming under tough scrutiny since voters sent his stock rising.
But Shrum throws cold water on the idea that any of the GOP also-rans will be the next big thing, supplanting Cain.
"There are very limited outcomes here," Shrum says. "If Perry gets a bounce in the next week or two, then he's alive again and he could become a real alternative.
"In the absence of that," says Shrum, "Romney has to be the nominee ? unless the party completely loses its mind."

Outbursts of violence after huge marches in Chile (AP)
SANTIAGO, Chile ? Violence again hit Chile's capital Wednesday as small groups of hooded youths clashed with police and marred an otherwise peaceful march by as many as 100,000 students demanding changes in public education.
Two huge marches, organized with approval from authorities, converged in a demonstration in Santiago calling on President Sebastian Pinera to expand the central government's role in educating Chileans.
The changes sought by students who have been protesting and boycotting classes nearly six months would fundamentally overhaul a school system that has been steadily privatized since the 1973-90 dictatorship. Pinera has insisted on more targeted reforms, such as increasing state subsidies so that poor students can afford to attend private institutions.
As Wednesday's demonstration broke up, small groups confronted police and violence spread quickly. A gas station was attacked, with vandals taking hoses and spraying flammable gasoline around. Police hosed the area down and kept others away, cutting off electricity to avoid sparking a huge fire.
Smaller protest marches Tuesday also had a violent fringe element of hooded rioters who tried to attack a gas station and set fire to a bus whose passengers had fled.
Student leader Camilo Ballesteros has said such violence only strengthens the government's efforts to paint striking students as out of control. On social networks, student activists are increasingly questioning who is responsible for the violence, with some raising the possibility that pro-government instigators are fostering trouble.
Chile's deputy interior minister, Rodrigo Ubilla, said early Wednesday that two police officers were injured overnight and 263 people were arrested nationwide "in another day of violence and destruction." No additional numbers of arrests and injuries were immediately available after Wednesday's demonstration.
Pinera has rejected the students' core demand that Chile provide free public education to all its citizens, arguing that this would force poor taxpayers to defray the costs of the rich. Students say the costs of free quality education could be more than covered by making the rich pay more in taxes.
Pinera has sent his own proposals to Congress, and appointed a commission of experts to provide him with further ideas in January.
Chile's political leaders on the right and left both say that the education debate will have to be resolved in Congress.
Student leaders are leery, citing what they consider to be a history of betrayals of reform by Chile's political establishment. But some students have said they may have no alternative since months of protests have produced few concrete achievements.

Plantronics M50
The $49.99 Plantronics M50 Bluetooth headset looks good, feels comfortable, delivers solid voice performance, and boasts incredible battery life. If you're looking for a long-lasting Bluetooth headset to use indoors for hours at a time, look no further. But if you need great music playback or serious noise cancellation, you may want to look elsewhere.
Design, Fit, and Pairing Call Quality, and Noise Suppression
The M50 looks stylish. It's made of matte black plastic, with a shiny blue accent ring that runs along the perimeter. The clear, plastic ear hook is the same shade of blue. There's a power switch on one side, a volume control button on the other, and the headset's body works as the Call button.
The headset is an on-ear design, which means the rubber ear tip rests on your ear rather than in your ear canal. There are no alternative ear tips or hooks in different sizes in the package. The plastic ear hook isn't detachable, but it's rounded and flexible, making the headset comfortable to wear for long periods at a time. The hook can be adjusted to wear the M50 on your left or right ear. The fit isn't tight, but it feels secure. I wore the headset for nearly five hours straight and forgot it was even there for most of the time.
For this review, I paired the M50 with an Apple iPhone 4?for Verizon ($99.99-$199.99, 4 stars) and a Samsung Galaxy S II?for T-Mobile ($229.99, 4.5 stars). The pairing process went smoothly for both phones. The first time you turn it on, the headset is already set to pairing mode. For subsequent pairings, just hold down the Call button for a few seconds, until the light on the outside of the M50 begins to flash red and blue, which indicates that you're in pairing mode. From there, simply enter the Bluetooth menu on your phone, locate the headset, and tap to pair.?
Call Quality, Noise Suppression, A2DP, and Conclusions
Once connected, you have limited volume control using the button on top of the headset. I found it easiest to leave the volume turned up on the M50, and to control it on whatever device I was connected to. In the earpiece, sound quality was very good. Voice calls sounded rich, clear, and natural, though maximum volume is just a touch low.
On the other end, calls made from indoors were solid. Voices were clear and easy to understand. But noise cancellation isn't this headset's strong suit. From a call placed outside, I was able to hear passing cars, and even the sound of light rain came through at the same volume as my voice. The call was still audible, but I wouldn't recommend this headset if you plan to use it outdoors or in an especially noisy environment.
The M50 streams A2DP content, which means you can use it to listen to audiobooks, GPS directions, music, podcasts, or other audio on your cell phone. Unfortunately, while everything sounded nice and clear, there was very little bass. It didn't sound tinny, but even voices on podcasts sounded thin, which is odd, since call quality is so rich.
If you have an iPhone, the M50 features a battery life indicator next to the iPhone's battery icon. The device will also announce a number of status alerts, including when your battery is high, medium, low, or needs to be recharged. Battery life was excellent, at a stunning 10 hours and 47 minutes of talk time.
The M50 has some other nice features as well. It pairs with two phones at a time, which is good for users looking to pair with both personal and work devices. If you're already on a call, you'll hear a ringtone notification of the incoming call from your second phone. To disconnect from the first call and answer it, tap the headset's Call button.
The M50 also works with Plantronics' Vocalyst service, which is an automated assistant that works by dialing a special phone number. Basic service, which costs $2.49 per month or $24.99 per year, offers voice email, news, reminders, and weather. It also allows you to record audio clips that can be automatically uploaded to your Facebook account. Vocalyst Pro adds message-to-text transcription along with a handful of other features, and costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
The Plantronics M50 is inexpensive and comfortable, with good call quality and great battery life. With better noise cancellation and A2DP streaming quality, this would be a must-buy for many Bluetooth users. But as it stands, the Samsung Modus HM6450?($99, 4 stars) is a better buy, thanks to improved music quality and a longer list of features; while it lists for $99, you can pick one up for close to $50. If you're looking for a Bluetooth headset with excellent noise suppression and A2DP streaming, the Jawbone Era?($129.99, 4.5 stars) is our top pick. And for $30 less than the Era, the Jawbone Icon ($99.99, 4 stars) is a close second.
