Florida State TE Nick O?Leary survives horrific motorcycle crash (Video)

Nick-Oleary-motorcycle-crashFlorida State tight end Nick O?Leary, who happens to be the grandson of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, was involved in a horrifying motorcycle crash recently in Tallahassee. Because it happened to occur right in front of a public transportation bus, the entire thing was caught on camera.

TomoaawkNation.com obtained a copy of the accident report on Wednesday, which stated that a Lexus pulled out in front of O?Leary?s motorcycle and violated his right of way. As you can see, the motorcycle hit the front of the car before slamming into and shattering the windshield of the nearby bus. Somehow, the junior was able to walk away from the accident.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher mentioned the crash earlier this month at a press conference, stating that O?Leary ?wrecked that daggone scooter and was banged up for about a month.? The accident took place in late May.

Obviously, O?Leary is fortunate to be alive. It?s amazing to hear that he avoided serious injury when you see the damage that was done to the motorcycle, car and bus. As a scandal with this famous college head coach taught us, motorcycles can be incredibly dangerous ? especially for high-profile athletes and coaches.

Optimism Helps Manage Stress Hormones | Psych Central News

Optimism Helps Manage Stress Hormones For years, scientists have observed the health benefits of a positive or optimistic outlook on life ? especially as related to stress management.

But?until recently, the biological basis for the stress reduction has been unknown.

New research from Concordia University is expanding our knowledge of how optimists and pessimists each handle stress by comparing them not to each other but to themselves.

Emerging findings show that the stress hormone cortisol tends to be more stable in those with more positive personalities.

Investigators tracked 135 older adults (age 60+) over six years, collecting saliva samples five times a day to monitor cortisol levels.

This age group was selected because older adults often face a number of age-related stressors and their cortisol levels have been shown to increase.

Participants were asked to report on the level of stress they perceived in their day-to-day lives, and self-identify along a continuum as optimists or pessimists.

Each person?s stress levels were then measured against their own average. Measuring the stress levels against participants? own average provided a real-world picture of how individuals handle stress because individuals can become accustomed to the typical amount of stress in their lives.

Joelle Jobin, who co-authored the study with her supervisor Carsten Wrosch, Ph.D.,?and Michael Scheier, Ph.D.,?from Carnegie Mellon University, said, ?for some people, going to the grocery store on a Saturday morning can be very stressful, so that?s why we asked people how often they felt stressed or overwhelmed during the day and compared people to their own averages, then analyzed their responses by looking at the stress levels over many days.?

She also notes that pessimists tended to have a higher stress baseline than optimists, but also had trouble regulating their system when they go through particularly stressful situations.

?On days where they experience higher than average stress, that?s when we see that the pessimists? stress response is much elevated, and they have trouble bringing their cortisol levels back down.

?Optimists, by contrast, were protected in these circumstances,? said Jobin.

While the study generally confirmed the researchers? hypotheses about the relation between optimism and stress, one surprising finding was that optimists who generally had more stressful lives secreted higher cortisol levels than expected shortly after they awoke (cortisol peaks just after waking and declines through the day).

Jobin said there are several possible explanations, but also noed that the finding points to the difficulty of classifying these complex hormones as good or bad.

?The problem with cortisol is that we call it ?the stress hormone,? but it?s also our ?get up and do things? hormone, so we may secrete more if engaged and focused on what?s happening.?

The study is published in the journal Health Psychology.

Debt Limit 2013: GOP Puts Spending On the Chopping Block

As lawmakers count down to ?X-date? ? the day the Treasury exhausts its extraordinary measures and officially reaches the debt ceiling ? House Republicans are making their?final preparations?for negotiations with the White House and the Democrat-controlled Senate. While President Obama and congressional Democrats widely support a debt limit raise with?no strings attached, Speaker John Boehner has abandoned his previous call for dollar-for-dollar cuts and has instead drawn up an assortment of menu options focused on reforming mandatory spending. Varying in size and scope, the prospective savings resulting from each of the proposed reforms would be tied proportionally to the length of time the Treasury?s borrowing authority is extended. The bigger the savings, the longer the government can continue to borrow.?

The largest ?entr?e? on the menu is the enactment of Medicare premium support, a comprehensive and controversial reform championed by House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.). The plan carries a price tag of a three-and-a-half year extension of the debt limit, and?supporters?believe the savings to Medicare would be significant as newly created market competition suppresses the skyrocketing costs ultimately burdening the program?s sustainability.

Further down the list, a medium-sized extension to the debt limit would equate to Medicaid or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP, or ?food stamps?) reforms ??proposals?directly from the House?s most recent budget. With the specific aim of providing states further flexibility to administer the programs with maximum efficiency, they would save the federal government $810 billion and $125 billion over 10 years, respectively. Chained-CPI is also on the table, but it is unclear to which of the several relevant programs it would be applied.

The smallest savings for the shortest extension include reforms to agricultural commodity and insurance programs ? also in the House?s fiscal year 2014?budget ? saving $31 billion over 10 years. Means-testing Social Security is put under this category as well. Though the particulars on this reform are hazy, a?similar?proposal to slightly reduce the benefit formula figures for the top 25% of beneficiaries has shown long-term savings of up to $59 billion over 30 years.

Though these specific selections may be controversial to some, one would have trouble denying that bringing down the ballooning costs of mandatory programs must go hand-in-hand with fighting deficits and massive national debt. Admittedly, it is hard not to perceive some of the smaller savings in the 10-year window as chump change compared to the repair needed for the largest mandatory programs. Net outlays for Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid are individually projected to double by 2023 and together account for?more than half?of all federal spending within the same window. Social Security alone is anticipated to inflate to?$1.41 trillion in 2023, totaling more than the projected annual discretionary outlays for the next 10 years.

Regardless of their often-entrenched ideologies, millennials must recognize that choices on mandatory spending must be made so as to?ensure that these crucial safety nets can be preserved and fortified for not only for the Baby Boomers, but also their own generation.

    Malaysian digital media companies Catcha Media ... - The Next Web

    Malaysian digital media firms?Catcha Media?and?Says.com?announced their plans to merge in May and now the RM60 million (around $20 million) deal has been completed.

    The coming together is one of the most significant in Malaysia?s digital media space to date. The two companies have agreed to merge ?certain assets? to create what they claim is one of the country?s largest digital advertising firms based on reach, its roster of 500-plus clients and cumulative advertising spend.

    Catcha Media specializes in online advertising, digital content and e-commerce solutions, and it has merged two of its business units with Says.com, a nationwide social news network, to strengthen its digital offering to take advantage of the growth in Internet, social media and smartphone usage.

    Says.com is a news network that collects stories using a crowdsourced and user curated model, the idea being that the community delivers news that it believes is relevant. The company is led by?CEO and co-founder?Khailee Ng, who is also?500 Startups? Partner in Southeast Asia, and it makes money via advertising and sponsored campaigns.

    Speaking when the deal was first announced, Catcha Media CEO?Patrick Grove voiced his expectation that the new entity would grow rapidly across Southeast Asia with a view to an IPO within the next twelve months.

    Says.com has already made moves overseas. Ng previously told TNW that the company was ?seeded? and ready to launch in?Philippines, Singapore, and India.

    The use of digital media has rocketed in Southeast Asia over the past few years, with Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and other markets ranked among?the world?s top users of Facebook, and?most engaged nations on Twitter.

    Catcha Media claims to reach 8 million Internet users per month, while Says.com says it is used by 6 million people per month.

    Vintage Baseball Game Comes To Easton Saturday

    EASTON, Conn. ? Easton?s Veterans Park will travel back to the 19th century Saturday for a pair of old-rules baseball games that pay tribute to the sport?s beginnings.

    The Friends of Vintage Base Ball, a Hartford-based re-enactment group, will play a pair of games at Veterans Park on July 13. The event is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Easton and the Parks and Recreation Department.

    Along with period-appropriate uniforms, the players will operate under 19th-century rules, using different eras as their guides for each of the two games. The first game will be played as if in the 1960s, the second under 1880s rules.

    Compared with the current rules, some of the changes are small, such as the pitcher standing closer to the batter and throwing underhand. Other changes are more noticeable, including that early-era players fielded with their bare hands and umpires did not award walks?batters took as many pitches as necessary until they hit a ball in play or struck out.

    Fans also won?t see another common occurrence in modern baseball: arguments with an umpire. As the Friend of Vintage Base Ball say, 19th-century umpires were treated with the same respect as a judge in his courtroom.

    ?In the Civil War era of base ball, there was only one umpire and his word was law,? the group says on its website. ?Players were not allowed to speak to the umpire unless spoken to, and at all times, the umpire was to be addressed as ?Sir.??

    The first game will start at 11 a.m., with the second game at about 12:30 p.m. Both games are at Veterans Park, 366 Sport Hill Road, Easton.

    Tickets are $5 each, $20 for families of four or more and free for children under 5. Seating is scarce, so attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

    Exclusive leaked photo shows Verizon's Moto X, and a small unexpected UI change

    Hot out of the inbox is this picture of the Verizon Moto X in all it's LTE glory. While we don't get a look at the back or any of the expected customization areas of interest, this picture does give us a nice idea of the overall size of the phone, as well as a hint that it might be running a newer version of Android. We also note that the person handling the phone hasn't picked up on the Graves Method, or the Schmidt variant.

    We see some, ahem, ample bezels at the top and bottom of the face of the phone, but overall the size looks fairly small by today's standards. The shape and outline remind us a lot of the Nexus 4, and we're guessing the two phones are similar in size. If you've not had a chance to check out a Nexus 4, think of a slightly shorter Galaxy S3.

    More interesting may be the clue that we're seeing something different than Android 4.2.2 here. The background behind the soft-keys is semi-transparent. This could be a Motorola software customization, but with Android 4.3 supposedly right around the corner this could be a new look for the stock launcher.

    A leaked roadmap points to an August release for the Moto X on Verizon, though we have no details or pricing. We are sure that it's coming, and everyone loves an early look.

    Oil rises to near $106 following dip

    The price of oil rebounded Friday to near $106 a barrel, supported by continuing tensions in Egypt and the sharp drop of U.S. oil stocks reported earlier in the week.

    By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 71 cents at $105.62 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, the Nymex contract fell $1.61 to close at $104.9 as profit-taking took hold after prices had hit their highest levels seen since April following two weeks of gains.

    Oil prices had previously been buoyant after figures showed a dramatic drop in U.S. supplies of oil and gasoline over the past two weeks. Traders took that as a sign of rising demand in the world's largest economy. U.S. oil supplies have dropped 20.2 million barrels, which is slightly more than one day's consumption for the U.S. Gasoline supplies have fallen 4.3 million barrels.

    "Steep declines have quickly rebounded leading us to believe that short term dips will be actively bought into as U.S. data remains supportive from a fundamental viewpoint," Sucden said.

    Demonstrations in Cairo on Friday by supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi highlighted the instability of the political situation in Egypt, which controls the Suez Canal, a crucial transport route for oil and gas shipments from the Middle East.

    "Uncertainty in Egypt is contributing to the current premium on crude benchmarks and with no clear signs of a resolution, instability could spread further in the region threatening oil supply," the Sucden report noted.

    Gains were limited by Thursday's forecast by the International Energy Agency which said that rising oil production in the U.S. and Canada would help supplies outpace global oil demand next year.

    Brent crude was up 51 cents at $108.24 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

    In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

    ? Wholesale gasoline rose 3.57 cents to $3.0067 a gallon.

    ? Natural gas added 3.3 cents at $3.646 per 1,000 cubic feet.

    ? Heating oil advanced 1.21 cents to $3.0071 a gallon.

    Snapped up a Chromebook for less than three Benjamins? If so, NPD thinks you've made Page and Co.'s devices account for 20 and 25 percent of laptops sold for under $300. Stephen Baker, an NPD analyst, told Bloomberg that the research firm was initially skeptical about the cloud-tied laptops, but Google's hardware "found a niche in the marketplace." Mountain View's mobile PC foray took eight months to reach current sales numbers and NPD claims that based on price, they're the fastest-growing part of the PC industry. Bloomberg attributes the recent uptick in sales to the education market and early adopters -- increased retail availability probably doesn't hurt, either.

    After a short burst of energy, the excitement and interest fizzles. And then, maybe, you get excited once again. And then, just like last time, after a short burst of energy, the excitement fizzles and takes you back to where you started, with little or no progress to show for it.

    For much of my life, I?ve set only realistic goals. Goals that could be easily accomplished. After all, what?s the point of dreaming big if the obvious result is failure?

    But I?ve gotten greedy. I?d rather get work done AND feel inspired.

    I don?t want to have just enough motivation to get by. I want as much as possible. More motivation equals more energy and more life.

    I know, doesn?t sound like much.

    I?ve read the advice before. I?m sure you have too. I wasn?t impressed.

    What are SMART goals?

    SMART is an acronym.

    T Time-bound A deadline has been set.

    The idea goes, follow these guidelines in setting up your goal, and you?ll be maximizing your chances for success. This process is often used at work, for example, requiring employees to set SMART goals during their annual review, and then reviewing progress the following year.

    But here?s the thing: SMART goals are a simplification. They were designed to be used in an organizational setting, to help bosses prod their employees into action. They?re often used for personal improvement, but only because most people think goal setting starts and ends with SMART.

    It doesn?t.

    SMART goals came into being in 1981. That?s 32 years ago. I promise you, motivation science has come a long way since then.

    That?s why I wrote this guide to goal setting ? to help increase your chances for success, for whatever your goals happen to be.

    Achievement is fun. More importantly, I consider motivation a terminal value ? something desirable in and of itself. Even if nothing else changed, I?d rather be more excited than less.

    So it should come as no surprise that tens of thousands of people have spent thousands of dollars each to have their hands held through the process. Effective goal setting is that valuable.

    Tony Robbins to the rescue.

    A few weeks ago, I listened to a Tony Robbins video for the first time in my life. Just an hour. I was pleasantly surprised ? some of the things he talked about were beyond goofy, like?Q-Links, but underneath the?excitement was some good advice.

    The seminar I saw a video of was essentially a really expensive goal setting workshop. Why were people willing to spend thousands of dollars for something they could have gotten from a book? The energy and encouragement.

    Without those things, most goal setting advice is useless, intellectually understood but unimplemented.

    Goal setting is extremely effective, but because of its unnaturalness, appears boring and tedious.

    Goals should be written down.

    I?ve read and heard that advice before. I never listened.

    Oh no, it?s okay. I?ll just say it aloud in my head.

    No. It?s hard to quantify, but across a number of studies, those who wrote their goal down were significantly (as in 2 to 3x) more likely to reach their upper limits.

    The first time I finally got around to actually writing something down, I had to spend an hour getting pumped up by reading an inspiring book.

    I?m lazy. That?s human nature. That?s okay, we can work around that problem.

    Over the next two weeks, I?ll introduce you to the nine critical components of effective goal setting.

    At the end of each post, you?ll see a quick and easy question. Take the time to answer and you?ll increase your chances for success.

    Ignore them or answer in your head, and you?ll be only slightly closer to achieving your goal.

    But I?m a realist. At the end of each post, I?ve got what will hopefully do for you what that inspiring book did for me and what Tony Robbins does for his customers. Go through it, and once you feel sufficiently excited, answer the question. If the inspiration box doesn?t help, tell me what would, and I?ll do my best to provide it.

    Cancer Research UK to Launch Campaign to Help Fight CancerA new campaign is being planned by the Cancer Research UK to encourage the people across the country to fight cancer.

    The charity claims that advancements in research have saved about thousands of lives.? It suggested that nearly 520,000 patients have benefitted from the improved research and treatments.

    Further, it said that the number of people losing lives from cancer was increasing in 1980s.? At those times, more numbers of people were dying from tobacco related illness and screening for the condition was also not widespread.

    Since then, there have been much advancement in treatments and there is also decrease in smoking rates.? Also, many national screening programmes have taken place which led to survival rate improvement among the patients.

    Recent figures have shown that the deadly disease has claimed lives of about 85,000 men and 75,000 women in the UK in 2010.? Survival rate now has improved in wake of improved drugs for diseases like leukaemia, said Professor Michael Olson, a Scientist at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow.

    Robotic Ultrasound Helps Identify Tumors During Kidney Cancer Surgery

    Novel Technology Makes Breast Cancer Surgery More Precise

    A robotic ultrasound may be able to help identify tumors during kidney cancer surgery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital.

    Kidney surgeons who perform the ultrasound robotically have direct control over the painstaking procedure instead of having to rely on an assistant for part of the task, which can be difficult and possibly dangerous.

    The researchers compared the robotic ultrasound probe to the same procedure using a laparoscopic ultrasound probe that requires an assistant to guide the probe for the surgeon. At the end of the study, the researchers compared both of the two methods to determine which would provide the best results.

    Besides giving the surgeon autonomy, the robotic ultrasound probe is more easily manipulated than the laparoscopic probe when measuring the tumor from certain angles," said Craig Rogers, M.D., a urologist at Henry Ford Hospital's Vattikuti Urology Institute and senior author of the study, according to a press release. "This can reduce the need to move the kidney to gain better position.

    "While our study showed comparable results from both methods of mapping and measuring kidney cancers, the robotic ultrasound probe enables the precision of a robotic instrument as well as direct surgeon control."

    The surgical procedure that the scientists studied was known as robotic partial nephrectomy, or RPN. This entailed the removal of a diseased part of a cancerous kidney by a surgeon-controlled robot instead of the traditional open surgery that is usually performed when the surgery is completed.

    Seventy-five consecutive RPN procedures were completed using a laparoscopic ultrasound probe and 75 consecutive RPNs were completed using a robotic ultrasound.

    "Both groups had similar tumor characteristics, operating times and other factors, and their outcomes were similar," Rogers said, via the release. "There was no statistically significant difference in measured variables between groups when controlling for tumor size and complexity. So the robotically controlled ultrasound probe performed on-par with traditional ultrasound, but with the added benefit of direct surgeon control and precision."

    Researchers found that the patients in both study groups were cancer-free during follow up examinations at a mean of 25.7 months for the laparoscopic group and 10.2 months for the robotic group.

    "We helped pioneer both the development and utilization of this robotic ultrasound probe right here at Henry Ford Hospital" Rogers said. "This is another advance in technology to help us with minimally invasive cancer surgery."

    Japan: Still a bear or 800-lb. gorilla?

    For over two decades, Japan endured an economic and financial market slump that rendered it the proverbial elephant in the room. It was there, but no one wanted to pay it any attention, much less commit assets. We don't necessarily count ourselves among that crowd, as we've had our sights ? and our dollars ? on Japan for some time. For those still seeing nothing more than a bear, we'd offer a different perspective.

    No. 3 Economy (Still)

    After an unprecedented 20 years of deflation, some may be surprised to know that Japan is still the No. 3 economy in the world, behind the US and China. Its gross domestic product is about one-third that of the US. Likewise, its population, at about 120 million, is roughly one-third the US population. Taken together, the two economies are essentially the same size on a per capita basis.

    Notably, the majority of Japan's household wealth sits in cash ? $9 trillion versus just $1 trillion in the national stock market. American households, meanwhile, hold about $18 trillion in US stock ? a difference of 18 times for an economy and a population one-third the size of the US. Assuming a level of stock market participation proportionately similar to the US, household stock ownership in Japan could hypothetically rise from $1 trillion to $6 trillion ? significant scope for the Japanese market to rise.

    Japanese assets are also underowned by institutional investors, with the Japanese government and corporate pension plans each having less than 20% of their assets in the local stock market. We believe money will find its way into the equity market, particularly as more investors acknowledge the tremendous value that exists in Japan.

    No. 1 Value?

    While it's true that Japanese stocks have already enjoyed strong gains ? up roughly 30% in local currency (USD) terms from their low in 2012 ? we still see value. The unsettling market correction of late May only sweetened the value proposition, while doing nothing to alter the favorable fundamental backdrop: Many Japanese companies are the best in the world at what they do; years of deflation and a strengthening yen have driven many of these companies to pare costs to a minimum, resulting in remarkable efficiencies; and corporate balance sheets remain attractive.

    Whereas US stocks have breached all-time highs more than once this year, Japan started its rally as the cheapest major market in the world and is still over 60% below its all-time high reached in 1989. Japan represented 14% of our benchmark index then, and it was the largest capitalization market in the world. Today, Japan's market cap has shrunk to about $2.5 trillion and roughly 4% of our benchmark. While this shrinking in importance has allowed some investors to conveniently ignore Japan, we have found tremendous opportunity there.

    Hello Change, Bye-Bye Bear

    We believe the catalyst for an enduring Japanese turnaround came in December with the landslide election that brought the Liberal Democratic Party into power and, with it, a mandate dubbed ?Abenomics? aimed at resurrecting the animal spirits of the economy.

    This coordinated and cohesive policy is focused on three arrows: 1) fiscal stimulus to kick-start economic activity; 2) monetary stimulus to further activity through a radical change in price expectations; and 3) growth strategies in the form of structural reform, aka ?the golden arrow.? The first two arrows are temporary, effectively buying time for the crucial element of reform to drive self-sustaining growth. Implementation of these reforms will take time, and comes with a heightened risk of failure absent the political cover of a rebound in economic activity. But changes here, we believe, will set up the Japanese economy for a prolonged period of growth and an end to the bear dynamics that persisted for so many years.

    In short, we see in Japan a combination of value and momentum that is rare in markets, catalyzed by a political change set on ending deflation and sparking growth. Combined with the fact that global investors are underallocated to Japanese stocks, there is more than ample scope for appreciation. Periodic market volatility is to be expected as conditions in Japan evolve; however, we believe the Japanese stock market could show strong relative performance for several years to come.

    After a quarter-century bear market, there's an entire generation of investors who have learned to ignore the equity markets in Japan. We believe that is a mistake, and would submit that Japan is no longer a bear, or even the quiet elephant in the room, but the 800-pound gorilla demanding investor attention.

    Dempsey: Snowden's disclosures have undermined 'importance of trust' with other countries

    WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman says NSA leaker Edward Snowden's disclosures about U.S. surveillance programs have undermined U.S. relationships with other countries and affected what he calls "the importance of trust."

    Gen. Martin Dempsey told CNN's "State of the Union" in an interview broadcast Sunday that the U.S. will "work our way back. But it has set us back temporarily."

    Russian officials say Snowden has been stuck in the transit area of a Moscow airport since arriving on a flight from Hong Kong two weeks ago.

    Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have offered asylum.

    The head of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, told CNN that he "absolutely" thinks that one of the countries will give Snowden travel documents.

    Rogers said the U.S. should look at trade agreements with the nations that are offering asylum "to send a very clear message that we won't put up with this kind of behavior."

    Sen. Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he wasn't surprised that those three nations were offering asylum. "They like sticking it to the United States," Menendez told NBC's "Meet the Press."

    He also mentioned re-examining U.S. trade policies and foreign aid to any country that might take in Snowden.

    "Clearly such acceptance of Snowden to any country ... is going to put them directly against the United States, and they need to know that," he said.
