Space surgery possible with zero-gravity tool

DRAINING an infected abscess on Earth is a straightforward procedure. On a spaceship travelling to the moon or Mars, it could kill everyone on board.

Blood and bodily fluids cannot be contained in zero gravity, which means there is currently no way to perform surgery in space without contaminating the cabin. This makes an extended stay problematic, says James Antaki at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"Based on statistical probability, there is a high likelihood of trauma or a medical emergency on a deep space mission," he says.

Antaki is part of a team of US researchers developing an astro-surgical tool that could help.

The Aqueous Immersion Surgical System, or AISS, is a transparent box that creates a watertight seal when it is placed over a wound and pumped full of sterile saline solution, says George Pantalos at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

The saline solution is held under pressure inside the AISS to prevent blood from seeping out of the wound. Airtight holes allow surgeons to access the submerged wound using handheld and orthoscopic instruments.

By varying the pressure within the AISS, the device could also be used to siphon up and recycle blood.

"You won't have a blood bank in space, so if there is bleeding you want to save as much blood as you can," says James Burgess, also at Carnegie Mellon, who came up with the concept.

Researchers will put the system to the test aboard NASA's zero-gravity C-9 aircraft next week in the first of several experiments planned. They will perform surgery on an artificial coronary system filled with synthetic blood to test its ability to keep blood inside the body and out of the surgeon's field of view. Other experiments are likely to include a sub-orbital flight test, says Pantalos.

Tam?s Haidegger, a bioengineer at Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary, says the AISS or a similar device will be an essential tool on future space flights to an asteroid, Mars or even aboard the International Space Station. ISS astronauts could soon be increasing their stay from six months to a year.

In the event of a medical emergency on board the space station, the only current option is to evacuate the astronaut back to Earth. This is not only dangerous for the patient but it is also extremely expensive, says Haidegger. Fortunately, however, no such emergency has yet occurred.

According to Haidegger, it will not always be necessary to have a doctor on board the spacecraft - a surgeon on Earth could assist with invasive surgical procedures via a teleoperated robot, making a hasty return to Earth unnecessary (Acta Astronautica, doi.org/jdx). The new device could play a part in such space surgery.

In the short term, Pantalos says the AISS may be useful in operating theatres back on Earth - for example, for brain and spine surgery, where bleeding presents serious complications.

??? They Didn't ! Japanese Entertainment News - Bagel Head ...

bagel-head

Bagel head - a "supposedly" new popular fashion trend in Japan which Western social media sites have glorified thanks to the National Geographic "Taboo" episode that studies and scrutinizes the bizarre beauty saline-injection. But according to many Japanese social media sites, such Western reports on "bagel heads" completely distort and fabricate a "wacky Japanese fashion trend" which doesn't even truly exist. According to the popular subculture blogger and television host La Carmina, many Japanese people didn't even know about "bagel head" until reports from overseas began hitting the net.

Here is a quick recap on bagel head, which hit the cyber world by storm this past week: basically, approximately 13.5 oz. of saline are injected into the forehead to create a large blob. The saline-administrator then places his/her thumb into the large mass to create the indentation. The procedure takes two hours and the bagel head look last less than a day (about 16 hours). The look was pioneered by Japanese artist Keroppy and has been deemed "one of the newest, biggest trends in Japan's body modification art scene" by many Western news outlets. The Japanese fashion trend was featured on a recent episode of "Taboo," a series which takes an "educational look into 'taboo' rituals and traditions practiced in some societies, yet forbidden and illegal in others."

But according to Japanese media, this is the first time many people actually living in Japan have even heard of the bagel head trend. According to a blog post on Japan Times, the Western media have merely "yet again conjured up a 'Big in Japan' trend."

La Carmina and her multimedia team "the Pirates" actually did most of the heavy-duty work involving the "Taboo" episode on bagel heads. According to La Carmina, the trend was extremely exaggerated in the popular television series: "It is not a trend even among the most hardcore body modification types. It's expensive. It takes specialized equipment. Most Japanese people don't even know about it."

While La Carmina has blogged about the bagel head and other Japanese fashion trends for years, she insists, "There's a strong, supportive subculture in Japan who are into trying new things. It's just another method of expression, like piercings or tattoos, but it is certainly not a trend. It is absolutely not permanent. It lasts for a night and then you pee it out."

A reporter for Excite News agrees, stating, "Having never heard of 'bagel head' I was as surprised as anyone to see these pictures of young people. A perfectly cute forehead transformed by a grotesque swelling. It looks quite like a space alien. I shudder to think, but according to news sites all over, this is Japan's latest trend?"

A pal of La Carmina was hoping the National Geographic study on the bagel head trend would help lead Westerners to a greater understanding of underground, Japanese cultures. But it seems like "understanding" just means glorification and amusement - "If you say something on the Internet about Japan," he points out, "people tend to believe it."

Antipsychotic drugmakers target marketing dollars at D.C. Medicaid psychiatrists, study indicates

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The D.C. Department of Health (DOH) has released a study by George Washington University School of Public Health & Health Services (SPHHS) indicating the high levels of marketing by antipsychotic drug manufacturers to Medicaid psychiatrists in the District of Columbia.

Antipsychotics are one of the top-selling drug classes; In 2010, top antipsychotic manufacturers spent more than $25 million on marketing in Washington DC. Among 26 psychiatrists receiving at least $1000 from top antipsychotic manufacturers in 2010, 7 (27%) were Medicaid providers. Medicaid psychiatrists, however, received a disproportionate, share of industry largesse, receiving two-thirds (66%) of gifts and payments. In 2008 (the most recent data available),antipsychotic use by Medicaid recipients was especially high in the nation's capitol, with approximately 1 in 10 recipients receiving a prescription -- a rate five times higher than the total national population.

A large proportion of Medicaid recipients are children under the age of 18. Antipsychotics can cause sedation, weight gain, diabetes, and other adverse effects. Previous studies have shown a high rate of inappropriate off-label use (for conditions the FDA has not approved). Some adverse events may be more likely to occur in children and young adults.

Lead researcher Susan Wood, PhD, Associate Professor at SPHHS, said, "Pharmaceutical marketing affects which drugs are prescribed. Prescribing decisions can have a profound effect on both state coffers and population health."

"Antipsychotics are clearly being used in patients who are not psychotic," said Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, collaborator on the report and Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The report is in fulfillment of AccessRx, the District of Columbia's 2006 law requiring public disclosure of pharmaceutical marketing expenditures spent on all health care providers by every pharmaceutical company that markets in the District. The DOH's Health Regulation and Licensing Administration commissioned the study by SPHHS on the 2010 data. The amounts paid by antipsychotic manufacturers to DC Medicaid and non-Medicaid psychiatrists are included in the report, along with the effects of the new public records on prescribing and marketing trends.

Access to the report is available on DOH's web site, http://doh.dc.gov/node/158762

New Foreclosure Activity and what you need to know about the Market

The market action index is a very important tool that we have supplied for our buyers and sellers of Santa Clarita real estate. ?In essence it tells our buyers and sellers what type of real estate market we are in within the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Numbers closer to 30 indicate a sellers real estate market, where properties are selling at over asking price and where inventory is low with a lot of buyers wanting to press the trigger on buying homes.

Below 30 would indicate that we are in a Buyer?s market ? lots of inventory and where sellers are accepting offers at less than fair market value.

To visit our Market Action Index pages that we have prepared for our Santa Clarita real estate clientele ? go to the Main website for Santa Clarita Real Estate and type the letters ?MAI? into the MacBoX. ?That way you will be taken to the pages where we have embedded the links to the specific MAI?s for each of the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Just a reminder ? make sure you are working with local Santa Clarita Real Estate experts. Not those that say they are but those that prove they are through the written word.

Brazil seeks Google exec arrest over YouTube video

28 min.

SAO PAULO???A regional elections court in Brazil has ordered the arrest of the head of Google's operations in the country after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate.

The ruling, which Google is appealing, marks the second time in two weeks that Brazilian judges have ordered the apprehension of executives at the search engine giant for not cooperating with local election laws.

The legal challenges highlight broader questions about Google's responsibility for content that third parties upload to its websites, such as an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

A spokesman for the regional elections court in Mato Grosso do Sul said on Tuesday that a judge had ordered the arrest of Fabio Jos? Silva Coelho, Google's top executive in Brazil, unless the videos attacking a local mayoral candidate were removed.

"Google is appealing the decision that ordered the removal of the video on YouTube because, as a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted to its site," the company said through a spokesman in Brazil.

Earlier this month an electoral court in the state of Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.

Days later another judge overturned the ruling.

At the time, the company also defended in a statement its users' rights of expression.

"Google believes that voters have a right to use the Internet to freely express their opinions about candidates for political office, as a form of full exercise of democracy, especially during electoral campaigns," the company wrote.

Life in the extreme: Hot acids and heavy metals make similar organisms deal with stress in different ways

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Life in extreme environments -- hot acids and heavy metals, for example -- can apparently make very similar organisms deal with stress in very different ways, according to new research from North Carolina State University.

One single-celled organism from a hot spring near Mount Vesuvius in Italy fights uranium toxicity directly -- by eating the heavy metal and acquiring energy from it. Another single-celled organism that lives on a "smoldering heap" near an abandoned uranium mine in Germany overcomes uranium toxicity indirectly -- essentially shutting down its cellular processes to induce a type of cellular coma when toxic levels of uranium are present in its environment.

Interestingly, these very different responses to environmental stress come from two organisms that are 99.99 percent genetically identical.

In a paper published this week online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, NC State researchers show that these extreme organisms -- basic life forms called Archaea that have no nucleus and that are so tiny they can only be seen under a microscope -- can teach us a lot about how living things use different mechanisms to adapt to their surroundings.

The researchers, led by Dr. Robert Kelly, Alcoa Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State, exposed two very close relatives of thermoacidophilic Archaea -- they live in highly acidic environments with temperatures of more than 70 degrees Celsius, or about 160 degrees Fahrenheit -- to pure uranium. One, Metallosphaera sedula, metabolized the uranium as a way to support its energy needs.

That in itself was surprising to Kelly and his fellow researchers, as it was the first report that an organism can directly use uranium as an energy source.

"This could be a new way to mine uranium using microorganisms to release the metal from ores -- a process referred to as bioleaching," Kelly says of M. sedula.

Its genetic twin, Metallosphaera prunae, reacted very differently. When faced with pure uranium, it went into a dormant state, shutting down critical cellular processes that enable it to grow. When the toxic threat was removed, M. prunae rebooted its cellular processes and returned to its normal state.

Kelly hypothesizes that M. prunae is an offshoot of M. sedula, with just a small number of mutations, or changes, to its genome that allow it to react differently when faced with heavy-metal toxicity.

Kelly says the findings could also have implications for understanding how antibiotic resistance develops and operates in pathogens.

"We have come across a new model for how organisms learn how to live in an environment that would otherwise be deadly for them," he says.

Kelly adds that the study calls into question the ways that scientists classified living things before the rise of the genomic era.

"How do we classify microorganisms now that we can compare genomes so easily?" Kelly asks. "These are not different species by the classical definition because their genomes are virtually identical, but they have very different phenotypes, or lifestyles, when faced with stress."

The research was funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense, and by the National Institutes of Health.

India to ease tax rules for IT sector

The Indian government is set to relax tax rules for the country's IT sector to make it a more attractive place for software development for multinational corporations (MNCs).

Citing a senior government official, The Economic Times reported Monday that a high-level panel recommended favorable tax treatment and a stable tax regime for the software industry, amid a worsening outlook for India's export industry.

The panel was appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chaired by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman, N. Rangachary.

Som Mittal, president of trade association Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies), said certainty and clarity in the tax regime and rules will encourage MNCs to bring more work to India.

He added since nearly 35 percent of India's export revenues came from MNCs and their captive units in India, these MNCs need to be encouraged to set up their development centers in India, rather than the Philippines or China. A captive unit is an offshore business unit of a company that functions as its own entity.

Nasscom has also said transfer pricing rules--which are meant to prevent MNCs from mispricing their products in order to move profits out of India--are too stringent and hurt the profitability of the IT sector.

So, the government will now fix a markup, or an acceptable level of deviation of market price called "safe harbor", which the panel will finalize by this December, Economic Times reported. After that, tax authorities will accept transfer prices declared by companies, which will bring more certainty in tax dues and also reduce disputes.

According to V. Balakrishnan, CFO of Infosys, tax issues have been a big distraction for the software industry as it tries to grow in a challenging global economic environment.

Another major complaint from Indian software companies has to do with the tax treatment of profits earned from on-site activities, which refers to work these companies do at their clients' sites, the report said. Tax authorities have said onsite activities are not considered exports, and therefore do not qualify for tax exemption.

The Economic Times said the panel held extensive consultations with the software players before finalizing the first of its three reports of tax recommendations.

The panel is one of the various attempts by India to improve flagging investment in the country, the article added.

NASA's solar fleet peers into coronal cavities

Friday, September 21, 2012

The sun's atmosphere dances. Giant columns of solar material ? made of gas so hot that many of the electrons have been scorched off the atoms, turning it into a form of magnetized matter we call plasma ? leap off the sun's surface, jumping and twisting. Sometimes these prominences of solar material, shoot off, escaping completely into space, other times they fall back down under their own weight.

The prominences are sometimes also the inner structure of a larger formation, appearing from the side almost as the filament inside a large light bulb. The bright structure around and above that light bulb is called a streamer, and the inside "empty" area is called a coronal prominence cavity.

Such structures are but one of many that the roiling magnetic fields and million-degree plasma create in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, but they are an important one as they can be the starting point of what's called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. CMEs are billion-ton clouds of material from the sun's atmosphere that erupt out into the solar system and can interfere with satellites and radio communications near Earth when they head our way.

"We don't really know what gets these CMEs going," says Terry Kucera, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "So we want to understand their structure before they even erupt, because then we might have a better clue about why it's erupting and perhaps even get some advance warning on when they will erupt."

Kucera and her colleagues have published a paper in the Sept. 20, 2012, issue of The Astrophysical Journal on the temperatures of the coronal cavities. This is the third in a series of papers -- the first discussed cavity geometry and the second its density -- collating and analyzing as much data as possible from a cavity that appeared over the upper left horizon of the sun on Aug. 9, 2007 (below). By understanding these three aspects of the cavities, that is the shape, density and temperature, scientists can better understand the space weather that can disrupt technologies near Earth.

flowtronex pumps - Flowtronex Pumps -- Reliable and Dependable ...

Having a reliable pump station can be a major investment that any facility can have. Choosing the proper equipment and device, installing them properly as well as maintaining them require special skills and knowledge which is very important when it comes to turf management.

When it comes to reliability and dependability, Flowtronex has created such reputation making it the leading manufacturer of various irrigation pumping systems worldwide. Since 1974, the company has been working with the best people creating the best Flowtronex equipment that have been trusted for several generations, from the early pump stations having fixed speed, to the most modern pump stations with variable speeds.

The Reliable Flowtronex Technology

Back in 1974, Flowtronex created some of the first pump stations which were skid mounted for the golf industry. It has continued this tradition of creating technological innovations and quality by introducing the Silent Storm pumping system with variable speeds. At present, it is considered as the finest pump station there is.

The system is designed for easier set and start. It combines Variable Frequency Drive with precision computer control that provides the golf course superintendents the best pump stations with fully programmable features.

Flowtronex was also the very first one to manufacture, develop and offer the Remote Monitoring Software. At present, Flowtronex, as part of the ITT Industries, has products and pumping stations that operate in more than 70 countries worldwide. It's no wonder why the key Golf Courses Consultants, top PGA courses and many knowledgeable superintendents turn to Flowtronex every time they need the reliable pumping stations.

Flowtronex is able to continue setting up the pace for turf grass industry by means of constant innovations of their product in control software. The company guarantees that it can design as well as manufacture the pumping systems that will meet customers' preferred specifications precisely, and combine them with the most modern technology and the highest quality to ensure that they will get more value for their money.

The SCADA System

The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or SCADA is the system used by Flowtonex for its pump stations. The system is composed of a central controller or a master monitor as well as remote terminals units or RTU. Some kinds of telemetry are utilized to transport the data into and back the RTU and the Central Controller. The SCADA system is very ideal for controlling and monitoring the remote assets like pump stations and other systems such as well pumps, water towers, automatic valves and even reservoirs. These monitored assets could be situated in same location, or even scattered around the entire country.

The SCADA system is a very effective tool that can generate records and data like discharges coming from a well pump, the flow of water over a barrier, or even in sewage treatment plants. The regulatory agencies often require obtaining accurate reports about any of these mentioned activities.

The SCADA system also provides sewer, water, electric and gas utilities worldwide.

The dependable and reliable performance of a pump station is very crucial for the successful management of turf grass. While a lot of golf courses make sure that their mechanics are trained and provide broad maintenance programs for turf equipment such as mower, the irrigation pump station pose bigger challenges. This is because the maintenance of pump station requires skills and experience in dealing with the 3-phase electrical systems.

At present, there are only few golf courses that have qualified personnel who can work legally and safely on electrical systems with 240 volts or 480 volts. Because pumping systems are becoming more complex, they require efficient services as well as specialized expertise from technicians and mechanics that are factory-trained to make sure they provide the optimum efficiency in services.

All Flowtronex pump stations are supported by a service organization worldwide called Flownet. This service network created by the company provides services globally which is composed of independent service technicians, factory-direct service technicians as well as round the clock phone support by the company. Because of this, you can be assured that all service technicians by Flowtronex are certified by Flownet and are undergoing extensive training every year.

Why Do People Read Self Help Books? | itworkss

It is an intriguing conundrum why scientific and social studies are constantly telling us all that our standard of living is now better than ever. And yet concurrently we are also deluged with health frightens and information to advise that the population is, generally, becoming increasingly unhealthy.

With high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease on the rise, doctors regularly attribute our health problems to the stress of everyday life. This suggests that although our lifestyles may have improved over the years, oahu is the quality with which we glance after ourselves which is deteriorating.

And for each of the marvels of modern science, it can be with increasing frequency that we are looking at holistic and choice therapies for replies. This is evidenced inside growing industry involving ?Motivation.? While there is no hard and fast meaning of what the term self help is the term for, thematically it could be said to will include a mixture of personal development and also popular psychology.

All it takes is a simple browse through the local book store and you?ll undoubtedly come across a protruding section of self help books, full of no end of titles across a multitude of portions. However, even though the issues covered may be great and varied, your motivation behind this sort of purchases inevitably lies with a fundamental requirement for self improvement, often having a desire to deepen one?s philosophical understanding of one?s self.

Just what exactly are the topics paid by such self help reading content? Common sub-genres tend to contain business self help, personal well being, life coaching and wealth creation.

Readily available areas you can see that self help books are not used purely for self representation and introspection, also for guidance in handling our professional life, relationships with others and overcoming physical and also mental barriers for example fighting addictions along with overcoming phobias.

As an illustration, there are any number of self help game titles that are written to respond to specific problems, for example how to quit smoking and how to lose weight. While these books may bring an underlying pop psychology to their strategies, additionally they sit alongside some much weightier substance which seek to create an entire change involving thinking in the visitor?s outlook. Methods and methods employed by these a lot more philosophical readings are often advised either from a personalized point of view, for instance an entrepreneur relating advice on how you can live your life to become an accomplishment, or else they might disclose techniques relating to nlp (nlp) as a means associated with practical implication.

The bottom line is that self help books as well as the industry at large are not able to solve anyone?s issues single-handedly. There will always be motivational components, willpower and perhaps even a new belief that what you are being told would really help bring about switch to facilitate the process. There?s no quick-fix to any singular difficulty. However, because of this thriving industry, there is now plenty of literature to document it.

Apple's Jony Ive tapped to design one-off Leica M for charity auction

In case the newly announced Leica M simply isn't astronomically expensive enough -- or charity-minded enough, as it were -- Apple's senior VP of design Jony Ive is working with the German photography company on a one-off version set to be auctioned for charity. Given the M's baseline price of €6,200 (about $8,100), we're guessing the one-of-a-kind version designed by one of the world's most influential designers is going to fetch a pretty penny at auction. Like, "sell of one of your extra homes" kind of money. Leica head Dr. Andreas Kaufmann announced the collaboration last night during a Leica event at Photokina -- an event that Ive himself was reportedly set to appear at -- where he said that the auction will be done with U2 frontman (and longtime friend of Ive) Bono Vox. The latest Leica M debuts in early 2013, though we won't see the fruits of Ive and Leica's collaboration for some time as the camera's design has yet to begin.

NASA postpones final ferry flight of Endeavour

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The beginning of space shuttle Endeavour's final flight to California has been postponed because of weather along the flight route.

NASA had planned for the 747 carrying the shuttle to take off from Kennedy Space Center on Monday. The flight is now scheduled to take off at sunrise Tuesday.

Low flyovers are still planned along Cape Canaveral and at NASA facilities in Louisiana and Mississippi. A stop in Houston will be shortened to one day.

Endeavour is expected to arrive in Los Angeles on Thursday for its eventual installation at the California Science Center. Endeavour is the second of NASA's three retired shuttles to head to a museum. Discovery landed at the Smithsonian Institution's display hangar in Virginia last spring. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy.

NHL lockout: What you need to know

The word "lockout" is looming over another major pro sport, this time the National Hockey League. In question-and-answer form, this is a look at the issues and implications of a work stoppage in the NHL.

____

Q: WHY IS THIS THE NHL HAVING LABOR ISSUES?

A: At its core, this is a dispute over money.

The league's labor contract, agreed to seven years ago, expires at midnight EDT Saturday night. Having gained a salary cap in the current collective bargaining agreement, NHL owners want additional economic concessions from players. Players currently receive 57 percent of hockey-related revenue, and the owners want to bring that number down as far as perhaps 47 percent. The union offered a deal based on actual dollars, seeking a guarantee of the $1.8 billion players received last season.

____

Q: WHY DO OWNERS NEED A BETTER DEAL?

A: NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says "in these economic times there is a need to retrench." He says the last deal the players got was fair. In fact, from the owners' perspective, it was more than fair, especially considering all of the NHL's expenses are covered by the league, not the players

____

Q: AND HOW HAVE PLAYERS RESPONDED?

A: Citing that annual industry revenue has grown from $2.1 billion to $3.3 billion under the expiring deal, players say they shouldn't be forced to make concessions. They contend if some teams aren't making money, management should re-examine the clubs' revenue-sharing formula.

____

Q: IT SEEMS LIKE LABOR STRIFE IS COMMON TO THE NHL. IS THAT TRUE?

A: It was been during the past two decades. Players struck in 1992, a walkout settled on the 11th day after 30 games were postponed. A 103-day lockout in 1994-95 led to the cancellation of 468 games, reducing each team's schedule from 82 games to 48. Another lockout eliminated the 2004-05 season, making the NHL the first major pro sports league in North America to lose an entire season to a labor dispute. It was settled on the 301st day, July 13, 2005, after players agreed to a salary cap.

____

Q: HAVE OTHER LEAGUES HAD WORK STOPPAGES RECENTLY?

A: Yes. If the NHL work stoppage starts Sunday, it would be the third lockout in an 18-month span, following the NFL (March 11 to Aug. 5 last year) and the NBA (July 1 to Nov. 26 last year). While no NFL regular-season games were canceled, the NBA cut each team's schedule from 82 to 66 games.

____

Q: WHICH OF THE U.S. MAJOR LEAGUES HAS HAD THE MOST LABOR TURMOIL?

A: Major League Baseball still leads with eight work stoppages (five strikes and three lockouts), the last a 7?-month strike that led to the cancellation of the 1994 World Series. The NFL has had five stoppages (four strikes and one lockout) and the NBA four (all lockouts).

____

Q: SO WHY HAS BASEBALL BEEN FREE FROM LABOR STRIFE OF LATE?

A: It's likely not a coincidence that the three major U.S. leagues with salary caps all have had turmoil. Since the 1994-95 strike, baseball players and owners have concluded agreements without stoppages in 2002, 2006 and last year, finding that they can make concessions in certain areas in exchange for gains in others. The sports with the cap systems appear somewhat more restricted, with less areas of back-and-forth since the basic structure is in place.

____

Q: WAS THE NHL HURT BY THE LAST LOCKOUT?

A: Attendance did not suffer at all, lending credence to the notion that hockey has a committed fan base that will retain its season tickets. The league's regular-season average increased from 16,534 in 2003-04 to 16,954 in 2005-06, according to STATS LLC, and was 17,454 last season. Only seven teams experienced substantial decreases from 2003-04 to 2005-06: Columbus (17,369 to 16,796), Dallas (18,355 to 17,829), Edmonton (17,678 to 16,833), New Jersey (15,060 to 14,230), the New York Islanders (13,456 to 12,609), St. Louis (18,560 to 14,213) and Washington (14,720 to 13,905). In contrast, Major League Baseball has larger venues and nearly twice as many games and is far more reliant on single-game sales. After the 1994-95 strike, MLB's average attendance didn't recover to its pre-walkout level until 2007.

____

Q: HOW ABOUT THE NHL's WIDER AUDIENCE, AS MEASURED BY TELEVISION RATINGS?

A: Tampa Bay's win over Calgary in the 2004 Stanley Cup finals averaged 3.3 million viewers on ABC and ESPN, according to Nielsen Media Research, while Carolina's victory over Edmonton in 2006 averaged 2.8 million on NBC and OLN. Average viewers rose to 5.2 million on NBC and Versus when Chicago beat Philadelphia in 2010, then fell to 4.6 million on the same networks for Boston's victory over Philadelphia in 2011 and 3 million on NBC and the NBC Sports Network for Los Angeles' win over New Jersey this year. Just for comparison with other leagues, last February's Super Bowl was seen by 111 million people and the World Series and NBA Finals each averaged more than 16 million viewers.

____

Q: HOW LONG WOULD A LOCKOUT LAST?

A: There's no telling, of course, but a settlement that would allow a midseason start figures to be a goal. The Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs is scheduled for Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Jan. 1, and the All-Star game is slated for Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 27. This year's Winter Classic, a 3-2 win by the New York Rangers over Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park, averaged 3.74 million viewers on NBC and was the fifth-most watched regular-season NHL game in 37 years. This year's All-Star game was seen by 1.3 million on NBC Sports Network. In an indication of how much training time is needed, the 1994-95 lockout ended on Jan. 11 and the season started nine days later.

Review of Shawn Loewen and Hayo Reinders? Key concepts in second language acquisition

Nazanin Ghodrati

Published Online: September 15, 2012
Full Text: HTML, PDF (304 KB)

Book Review

Loewen, S., & Reinders, H. (2011). Key concepts in Second Language Acquisition. Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan. ISBN 0230230180, 256 pages, $23 US.

Key concepts in Second Language Acquisition is a user-friendly terminology guide which, according to the back cover, is the ideal quick reference text for students of linguistics and language teachers alike, and for researchers as well according to the authors themselves. The book is written by Shawn Loewen, an Associate Professor in the Second Language Studies program at Michigan State University, and Hayo Reinders, Head of Learner Development at Middlesex University. The book consists of a four-page introduction, a glossary holding 453 alphabetically-ordered entries accompanied with illustrations (i.e. tables & figures), cross-referencing of related entries when needed, and key references for each entry. The book finishes with an index of key references.

What does it mean to acquire a second language? How is a second language defined in a multilingual context? Key concepts in Second Language Acquisition raises these critical questions in an effort to consider them (not to answer them) throughout the book by providing concise definitions of key terms and concepts in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). In the introduction section of the book, in an effort to define SLA, the authors break down the term into its parameters (i.e. second, language, acquisition). The above critical questions are raised when the authors define the last two parameters (i.e. language, acquisition).

I believe the authors have been only partly successful in reaching the purpose of considering the above key questions in SLA. For instance, when defining the term language, the authors refer to different fields of study such as linguistics, pragmatics, and discourse, and to how each field views language use differently. While discussing these different views, relevant key terms and concepts are mentioned, all of which the reader expects to be included as separate entries in the glossary. However, a number of them such as lexis, pronunciation, dialects, language variation, and mutual intelligibility are missing, even though they are stated in the introduction section of the book. One might argue that although the term pronunciation is not defined, phonology is; or although the term lexis is not defined, lexicon is. Even if the terms are tapping roughly the same concepts, not including them as separate entries in the glossary shows inconsistency in the authors? selection, since other terms tapping roughly the same concepts such as vocabulary and lexicon are included as separated entries in the glossary (see p. xii). In other cases, key terms that are raised as points of concern in SLA such as standard vs. non-standard language, learning vs. acquisition, and development vs. acquisition are defined and relevant issues are explained in the glossary. Therefore, the authors have accomplished the stated objective of the book in these cases.

As for the glossary itself, the power of this book lies, partly, in its scope. In contrast with A Glossary of Applied Linguistics by Davies (2005) which is criticised for its lack of clear and predetermined criteria for its selection of terms and concepts (Contesse, 2007), the criteria for selecting terms and concepts in Loewen and Reinders? glossary is limited to defining those which are a) unique to SLA, and b) from other disciplines such as linguistics or education but influential in SLA (e.g. Universal Grammar, Sociocultural Theory). Those terms and concepts that are primarily linguistic and/or sociolinguistic in nature and those only related to teaching methodology, such as grammar explanations, are not included. Such a narrow scope not only increases the specificity of the content but also that of the audience; those interested in areas of applied linguistics which are for instance ?purely? linguistic or sociolinguistic in nature might find it far less inclusive as opposed to those interested in SLA and L2 learning.

Another strength of the book is its inclusion of list of key references to published works, not at the end of the book as bibliography, but proceeding right after each entry. This indicates that the authors understand the limitation of the book which aims to provide ?only an introduction to the most important concepts in the field? (p. xiii), and therefore the need to refer the reader to other prominent sources on the topic. Keeping references close to each entry does not only make key influential sources, which are relevant to each concept, easily accessible, but also gives the reader exposure to authors and articles that have significantly shaped each of the key terms and concepts.

In conclusion, for Loewen and Reinders, the need for a key concept book about SLA arises due to the existence of three realities: 1) formalisation of SLA as an academic discipline, 2) growth of second language industry, hence its economic reality, 3) concern for the questions of what it means to acquire a second language, and how a second language is defined in a multilingual context. Although, at times the latter is not fully accomplished, I believe, Loewen and Reinders have been successful in providing an up-to-date, clear, objective and in-depth yet concise source of definitions of key terminologies in SLA. Key concepts in Second Language Acquisition proves to be a reliable quick-reference text for students, teachers and researchers in the field.

Obesity more common among rural residents than urban counterparts, study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2012) ? A new study finds that Americans living in rural areas are more likely to be obese than city dwellers. Published in the National Rural Health Association's Fall 2012 Journal of Rural Health, the study indicates that residential location may play an important role in the obesity epidemic.

Led by researchers at the University of Kansas, the study analyzed data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics and is the first in more than three decades to use measured heights and weights. Previous studies have relied on self-reported data, which typically underestimate the prevalence of obesity.

Christie Befort, Ph.D., assistant professor of preventive medicine and public health at the University of Kansas Medical Center, believes there may be two significant reasons why rural residents are more likely to be overweight: cultural diet and physical isolation.

"There is a definite cultural diet in rural America, full of rich, homemade foods including lots of meat and dessert," said Befort, who led the study. The study, which also examined demographic and lifestyle factors, found that rural Americans typically consume a diet higher in fat.

Rural residents also face challenges to accessing health care, prevention and lifestyle activities.

"Access is often about travel time in a rural area, but it can also be that there's no place to go -- literal physical isolation," said Befort. "It's tough to get to a gym if you live outside of a town without one."

The research demonstrated that the rural-urban obesity disparity existed in younger Americans, ages 20-39, but not in older age groups. Befort believes this can be partially attributed to increased mechanization of previously labor-intensive jobs.

"Physical activity is now needed to compensate for diet and technology," said Befort. "That requires cultural change because rural areas typically don't have a culture of physical activity as leisure time."

Befort examined several factors which are thought to affect obesity, including diet, physical activity, age, race, gender, and education. The researchers discovered that even when other contributing factors are held constant, rural residents were more likely to be obese.

"Living in a rural area isn't always recognized as a category for obesity-related health disparities but, according to our study, it should be," said Befort.

"We simply cannot ignore the link between obesity and poverty, and the disproportionate impact this is having on rural America," said Alan Morgan, the National Rural Health Association's CEO. "If we truly want to decrease health care costs and improve the nation's health status, we are going to have to start viewing obesity as a top-tier public health concern for rural Americans."

What Is Markdown, and Why Is It Better for My To-Do Lists and Notes? [Ask Lifehacker]

What Is Markdown, and Why Is It Better for My To-Do Lists and Notes?I've heard a lot about using Markdown for writing and editing text, especially in the case of writing on tablets. But I'm not really sure what people like about it. Is it worth switching from plain text or Word to use it?

Sincerely,
Mark Downs

Dear MD,

At its core, Markdown is a super simple way to add formatting like headers, bold, bulleted lists, and so on to plain text. It was originally designed to be an easy alternative to HTML, and allows people to create web pages with no HTML experience?but it's also a great way to organize notes, to-do lists, and other things. It has all the advantages of plain text, but with the organizational power of a word processor. The end goal is a minimalist writing system that you can use to get your thoughts down, and then export them elsewhere without worrying too much about the appearance.

What Markdown Is and How It Works

What Is Markdown, and Why Is It Better for My To-Do Lists and Notes?Markdown was initially created by John Gruber (of Daring Fireball) as a simple way for non-programming types to write in an easy-to-read format that could be converted directly into HTML.

Markdown uses a very simple formatting syntax to accomplish the same thing that HTML or Rich Text Formatting does. The difference is that it's simpler than HTML and you don't have to worry about opening and closing tags. It also doesn't have all of the menus associated with most text editing programs. To format text, Markdown uses punctuation and characters you're already familiar with.

For example, to create a header you use hashtags. So, "# HEADLINE" is a large header. "## HEADLINE" would be a little smaller, "### HEADLINE" would be smaller still.

Want to make a bulleted list? Just type in a "-" "+" or "*" before any item and the list is created automatically. No need to start it, end it, or deal with funky formatting.

To add emphasis, you can either use an asterisk (*really?*) for italics, or two asterisks for bold (**really!**).

Everything else that Markdown does is similar. Instead of opening and closing lines with angle brackets like you would in HTML, you use a simpler set of keys. Markdown seems a little complicated at first, but you can find a full list of all the syntax over on Daring Fireball. You can also run through the Slekx interactive tutorial to learn it all quickly.

This isn't just handy for bloggers or people who use HTML. Markdown is easy to export to other formats, which means you can use it to write longer emails, your novel, or pretty much anything else.

So, Why Should You Use It?

What Is Markdown, and Why Is It Better for My To-Do Lists and Notes? We're big fans of plain text writing?or at the very least, writing with the exact amount of tools you need. If plain text is too minimal for you because you need formatting, but you don't want to waste time with too much formatting with the likes of Microsoft Word, then Markdown is a good in-between. It's also supported in tons of different web applications, including Tumblr, some Wiki's, and others.

From a productivity standpoint, Markdown is useful because it gets to the core of what matters: your writing. Once you learn how to use it you can quickly and instantly format text without ever touching a mouse.

The best part? You can actually write Markdown in pretty much any text editor and convert it to another with Markdown Dingus. But if you're looking for one tuned specifically for Markdown, here are a few options:

  • Web - Hashify: Hashify is simple?type everything in Markdown on the left side, and it automatically formats it on the right side.
  • Windows - Writemonkey: Writemonkey is a fantastic minimilist writing program for Windows that fully supports Markdown. ResophNotes, our favorite note taking app for Windows also supports Markdown.
  • Mac - nvALT: nvALT is a fork of our favorite syncing note taking app Notational Velocity. The best part is that is operates exactly like Notational Velocity, but with Markdown support.
  • iOS - Drafts: We're big fans of Drafts. It also has full support for Markdown and export features?which means if you need to type a fancy looking email on your phone then Drafts can handle it. That said, you have a ton of options for Markdown editors on iOS, including Lifehacker favorite Simplenote. Take a look at iTextEditors for a breakdown of all the writing apps and the formats they support.
  • Android - Epistle: Epistle is a pretty straight-forward note taking app that's simple to use. Its Markdown support is great, and it also has full Dropbox support for syncing.

The Additional Cool Things You Can Do with Markdown

What Is Markdown, and Why Is It Better for My To-Do Lists and Notes?Markdown is all about text, and it works great for writing long and short form documents. But Markdown has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Here are a few things you can use it for.

  • Compose Emails: Markdown is perfect for writing emails when you need to have special formatting. The nice thing about using Markdown is that you don't have to spend time in your email client, so you can write it quickly, send it out, and then move on.
  • To-Do Lists: We love plain text to-do lists, and Markdown is essentially the same thing. Simply write out your to-dos, and you're done. No futzing about with anything. If you'd like a specialized app, many to-do lists, like the previously mentioned Cheddar for iOS support Markdown as well.
  • Organized Notes: Most note taking apps support Markdown and it's an easy way to jot down notes, and then organize them without fiddling around with formatting.
  • Host a Web Page, No Programming Skills Required: Using a service like Dropbox you can easily host your own web site. If you don't know HTML, you can use Markdown to easily create a page. This is handy for things like resume's or any announcement you may need to send out.

Markdown isn't for everyone, but it's not difficult to learn, and you can do a lot with it. It's perfect for anyone who thinks plain text is too minimal, but word processors are too bloated.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker
