Heart attacks can be prevented by vaccines that target the root cause of Cardio vascular disease (CVD), according to the results of studies, presented by Professor Jan Nilsson of Lund University, Sweden, at the recently held Frontiers in Cardio Vascular Biology (FCVB) 2012 conference organized by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Addressing the delegates, Professor Nilsson said that treating cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients with vaccines and antibodies is a completely new approach in combating heart disease and could be considered truly ground breaking.
The research team led by Prof. Nilsson conducted experiments on the hypothesis that CVD might be an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks oxidized LDL. These experiments led the way for developing a vaccine that could reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and plaques already present.
The press release by European Society of Cardiology (ESC) reporting the sessions of the conference states ?The resulting CVX-210 vaccine, currently in development by CardioVax, involves one of these three amino acid fragments (residues 3136 to 3155). CardioVax are currently awaiting FDA clearance to start phase 1 clinical trials with the vaccine, which will be given subcutaneously. Also in development is a second vaccine using the same amino acid sequence that has been formulated in a way that makes it possible to give intranasally.?
