- Friends First? Program was developed to help bridge the social gap between students with disabilities and those without by providing a social structure for students to come together, form a club, and work together on service learning projects that will benefit their schools and community. This program is intended to support schools with the social inclusion component of inclusive education. Many school districts have been very successful at implementing inclusion programs at an academic level but may still experience challenges when it comes to assisting students with disabilities to experience a fully inclusive social life among their non-disabled peers in the school environment.
- ?Everyday Courage? The Workshop: We explore many different meanings of courage and facilitate participant?s reflection on the obstacles in their own lives and how they have found the courage to overcome such obstacles. Through drama activities participants learn how to make good choices in their daily lives and our arts activities assist them to visualize overcoming life?s challenging situations. Karen believes that ,?This workshop will also help participants reach out and show other people that being courageous towards others is the most important thing we need to work on in our lives.?
- We will be offering the ?Everyday Courage? Workshop four times a year for participants in the greater Portland area. Please check our Speaking Engagements Calendar for next upcoming ?Everyday Courage? Workshop.
- ?Get Moving?! Karen, along with her co-facilitators, conduct ?Get Moving? workshops in both the Greater Portland area and at conferences and self-advocate workshops all across the country.Our inclusive Portland area workshops span six weeks and are taught in collaboration with Phillip Summers, an Iron Man tri-athlete and local fitness trainer/educator. This fitness workshop includes an introduction to a variety of physical fitness activities for youth and young adults that are adaptive in nature, including yoga, strength training, dance, cardio, and sports/games. In addition to learning new exercise techniques, students spend a class on cooking together to learn the importance of nutrition and we end the workshop with a session devoted to creating a personal exercise plan to accomplish future fitness goals. Karen also loves to bring the ?Get Moving? program to self-advocates and families nationwide, presenting a shortened version of the workshop at conferences. Karen discusses her swims and the need for everyone to make physical fitness a priority in their daily lives to maintain optimum health, mental focus and a positive attitude. Through hands-on fitness activities and guided exploration Karen assists self-advocates and families in creating realistic fitness plans that are enjoyable, adaptive and fit into everyone?s daily lives.
- Life Quest? is a seven week workshop (one day per week for seven weeks) for young adults with developmental disabilities who are making the transition from the world of high school to the adult world of work and higher education. We created the ?Life Quest? curriculum to assist young adults in learning more about themselves and the path they would like to create for their own future. Through ?Life Quest? young people learn to trust themselves, their own desires, and begin to plan for a life of greater independence and self-determination. This workshop is structured to provide a mixture or drama, arts, and skill building activities that assist young people in planning for their future as independent young adults. Whether its an interest in attending a college transition program, an associates degree, finding a rewarding career, or learning to take mass transit the ?Life Quest? workshop will help participants focus on developing a life plan that will offer concrete steps to help participants accomplish their dreams.
- We All want to Belong-Every child wishes to feel like they belong at their schools and that their classrooms are safe spaces where they can learn, laugh and grow, but not every child experiences this sense of belonging. Texas-based defense contractor hacked by Anonymous
LONDON (AP) ? A Texas-based defense and aerospace firm says one of its top officials has had his email account broken into by the hacking group Anonymous.
Vanguard Defense Industries' chief executive Michael Buscher says messages have been stolen from the private Gmail account of Richard T. Garcia, a former FBI agent who now works as the company's senior vice president.
Anonymous says in a statement that it has pilfered 1 gigabyte of private emails and documents from Garcia's account.
But Buscher told The Associated Press Friday that "there isn't anything sensitive" in the released material.
Buscher's Spring, Texas-based company specializes in the design and development of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles for law enforcement and the private sector.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Lydia Strunk of Idaho, faces several months of physical therapy and will remain hospitalized until the weekend, said Dr. Ernesto Torres.
The wound is about 10 inches long and runs from below her knee to the ankle, said Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, trauma director at the Rio Piedras Medical Center.
"It was like (the shark) tried to tear away," he said. "She has an imprint of all the shark's teeth."
Strunk is expected to make a full recovery but will likely have some nerve damage and limited movement in her right foot, he said. Doctors repaired four tendons that are used for flexing the foot, and it will take up to five months for Strunk's damaged nerves to grow back, he said.
The shark bite was confirmed by a marine biologist, but he could not identify the type of shark because no teeth were recovered, Torres said.
Strunk has declined to speak to the news media and does not want photos of her injury released, doctors said. Her parents are expected to arrive in the U.S. Caribbean territory Thursday afternoon, doctors said.
Strunk was one of 16 people kayaking late Tuesday in the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay in Vieques, a tiny island just east of Puerto Rico. She jumped into the water with four other people when something hit the leg of the person next to her. Seconds later, Strunk was bitten, doctors said.
"The shark's mouth basically clamped over her calf," Rodriguez said.
The shark was likely curious, according to the biologist who analyzed the bite.
The bay attracts hundreds of visitors mesmerized by its glowing waters that are activated when microscopic organisms are disturbed. But its murky waters also serve as a nursery for several species, including tiger, nurse, reef and hammerhead sharks.
The incident was reported to the Florida Museum of Natural History, which records such statistics.
Shark attacks are rare in Puerto Rico. Only seven attacks have ever been reported, two of them fatal, with the last death occurring in 1924, according to museum statistics.

Scientists show how gene variant linked to ADHD could operate; Study offers potential new target for treatment of ADHD
ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2011) ? A study using mice provides insight into how a specific receptor subtype in the brain could play a role in increasing a person's risk for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The research, conducted by the Intramural Research Program (IRP) at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, could also help explain how stimulants work to treat symptoms of ADHD.
Dysfunction of the dopamine D4 receptor subtype is linked to ADHD as well as other disorders characterized by decreased impulse control, including drug abuse. One subtype variant, D4.7, has been of particular interest because of its increased prevalence in those diagnosed with ADHD. However, the function of this particular variant in ADHD has been poorly understood.
In the study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers inserted three variants of the dopamine D4 receptor into cells and into mice so that they could investigate differences in biological activities. The researchers found that the D4.7 variant, unlike its D4.2 and D4.4 counterparts, was not able to interact with the short version of the dopamine type 2 (D2S) receptor to reduce glutamate release in a brain region associated with impulsivity and symptoms of ADHD in humans.
"Although previous studies have shown that dysfunctional dopamine D4 receptors are implicated in ADHD, this is the first study to show how this genetic difference might translate into functional deficits seen with this disorder," said NIDA Director Dr. Nora D. Volkow. "Further research is needed to explore how this deficient interaction between receptors might be remedied, which could then lead to new medications for the treatment of ADHD."
Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention and controlling impulsive behaviors, and may be overly active, often resulting in poor school performance and social difficulties. They are also at increased risk for substance use disorders, particularly if their symptoms go untreated.
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed neurobehavioral disorder of childhood, and the number of children diagnosed continues to rise. According to the Center for Disease Control's National Survey of Children's Health, the number of children aged 4-17 years that were identified by their parent as ever being diagnosed with ADHD increased by 21.8 percent from 2003-2007. By 2007, nearly one in 10 children aged 4-17 years were, at some point, diagnosed with ADHD. Among children with current ADHD diagnoses, 66.3 percent were taking medication for the disorder.
The most commonly used treatment for ADHD involves administering psychostimulant medications. Although these medications alleviate some of the symptoms of ADHD, it is unclear how these compounds act within the brain to do so.
"Our results suggest that psychostimulants might reduce glutamate release by amplifying this D4/D2S interaction," said Dr. Sergi Ferr?, primary author for the study. "These results might also explain why these medications are less efficient in patients with the D4.7 variant."
The study was the result of a multinational collaboration between researchers at the NIDA IRP, institutes in Spain (the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Navarra), Mexico (the National Polytechnic Institute), and Argentina (the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research).

ROME (AP) ? The leader of Italy's largest union is threatening a general strike against an austerity package that Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government hastily pushed through to balance the budget by 2013 and avoid financial collapse.
The threat came amid mounting criticism Sunday of the euro45.5 billion ($64.8 billion) package passed Friday in response to demands by the European Central Bank.
Critics say the package ? a mix of spending cuts, job cuts and tax increases, including a "solidarity tax" for high-earners ? will strangle Italy's stagnant economy, which is now expected to grow by only about 1 percent this year.
Other critics, including nine members of Berlusconi's own coalition, say it unfairly targets the middle class and fails to tackle Italy's massive tax evasion problem.
Susanna Camusso, leader of the CGIL labor union, criticized measures aimed at liberalizing Italy's labor market and targeting its pension system, saying a strike is the only way to "change the inequity of this package." She told the La Repubblica newspaper that union officials will meet Aug. 23 to set a strike date and invited other unions to join.
At least one other union, CISL, said it will not take part in the protest, although it said the package needed to be improved.
The new measures include euro20 billion ($28.5 billion) in cuts and tax hikes for 2012 and euro25.5 billion ($36.3 billion) for 2013. They abolish some local government layers and gradually eliminate some 50,000 elected jobs ? leading to fierce protests by local officials. Citizens face a 5 percent additional tax on income above euro90,000 ($128,250) and a 10 percent additional tax on income above euro150,000 ($213,750) for the next three years.
Both Berlusconi and his finance minister, Giulio Tremonti, have defended the government's actions. Tremonti insisted the debt crisis could not have been predicted but said it could have been avoided with the creation of Eurobonds, a new joint bond backed by all 17 countries using the euro.
"We wouldn't have gotten here if we had had Eurobonds," Tremonti told reporters, calling for more "integration and consolidation of public finances in Europe."
Germany, the strongest economy in the eurozone, has rejected the Eurobond idea.
Berlusconi called Italy's new austerity measures fair and said they had won praise from the European Central Bank and leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
EU President Herman Van Rompuy called the measures were "crucially important" not just for Italy, the eurozone's third largest economy, but for all of Europe.
"I fully support and welcome the timely and rigorous financial measures," Van Rompuy said after talking to Berlusconi on Saturday.
Berlusconi insists the measures will be passed by parliament quickly when lawmakers return from vacation. But many ? from the opposition, the business world and even Berlusconi's own ranks ? have urged parliament to make amendments.
Emma Marcegaglia, the head of Italy's entrepreneurs association Confindustria, praised some moves ? such as cutting political jobs and liberalizing local services ? but demanded the government do more to stimulate growth. She also urged an increase in the value added tax and a reform of the pension system.
Italy has one of the highest debts in the eurozone. The European Central Bank last week began buying Italian and Spanish bonds to try to stop those countries' borrowing costs from soaring, so they can avoid the fate of Greece, Portugal and Ireland, which have all needed huge international bailouts.
