Porsche Design BlackBerry P'9981 on sale now, but only at Harrods (Digital Trends)

BlackBerry P9981 Porsche DesignHow fitting that RIM and Porsche Design has chosen one of the world?s most famous luxury department stores, Harrods in London, as the exclusive seller of its luxury BlackBerry P?9981 phone.

Announced at the tail end of October but with no firm release date attached, the flashy device has now gone on sale there, where it?s priced at a mere ?1,275, or a touch under $2,000.

That?s SIM-free of course, but admittedly the price would probably only be considered ?mere? by regular Harrods patrons, as it?s considerably more than the standard Bold 9900 on which it?s based.

Like its cheaper cousin, the P?9981 has a 1.2Ghz processor, 768MB RAM, a 2.8-inch 640 x 480 resolution touchscreen and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. It?s separated by that eye-catching design, the brushed metal fascia and the hand-wrapped, all-leather rear panel.

BlackBerry OS 7 has been treated to a Porsche Design makeover too, as it uses a custom UI and has the popular augmented reality app, Wikitude World Browser, pre-installed.

Available with either English or Arabic as the standard language, anyone keen to get their hands on this genuinely exclusive BlackBerry will have to make the journey to Harrods ? or at least their flunky will anyway ? as it?s only available in-store and not online. However, we?re willing to bet they would send one out with your weekly order of Dom Perignon if you asked nicely.

Phonearena.com spoke to a Harrods representative, who described the P?9981 as ?in very high demand and selling fast.?

Cuban MBAs? A Spanish School Hopes to Train Havana's Future Moguls (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Am?ricaEconom?a.

(HAVANA) -- Even before Cuba began cracking its doors open to capitalism, Paulino Garcia always displayed an entrepreneurial spirit. He spent two years at a university in the Soviet Union before returning to his native Cuba to continue his law studies at the University of Havana. After working for a firm called Climex, Garcia eventually managed to open his own restaurant in 1996, thanks to a new law introduced that allowed people to work for themselves.

"I built it from nothing, and with a lot of sacrifice," Garcia says. "I really wanted to have my own restaurant."

When Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino told Jos? Luis Mendoza, the president of the Catholic University (UCAM) in Murcia, Spain, that all of the administrators and owners of small businesses in Cuba needed to go to business school, he was thinking about people like Garcia. (See how the Catholic Church is making a comeback in Cuba.)

At the end of 2010, Raul Castro's government changed the rules and opened up the economy to a small amount of private business. In November, it announced that barber shops and small cafeterias would become private, and that he would allow an expansion in the number of small restaurants like Garcia's. Now people are starting to realize that running a business requires more than just intuition and common sense.

"The cardinal was reflecting on this need, and our president offered to help fill it," says Gonzalo Wandosell, the vice-dean at the Business Management School at UCAM.

The classes began on Sept. 26 in a symbolic building: the old seminary of San Carlos and San Ambrosio, founded in 1689 and home to the Cultural Center of Father Felix Varela. Wandosell indicated that the 45 founding students come from both state-run companies and private companies, and that there is no requirement for students to be Catholic. "They are engineers, lawyers and economists."

The Church's role in the new MBA program has been substantial. Since 1959, the Cuban clergy has been enemy No. 1 of the revolution, although the Church-state relationship has improved substantially since then, especially after Pope John Paul II's 1998 visit. (See pictures from Fidel Castro's years in power.)

On the other hand, the financing for the project has come from a Spanish university, the colonial power up until 1898, which many Cubans still refer to as the Motherland. The connections between the two countries didn't chill in the wake of the Communist revolution, with Spanish investment in Cuba still strong today.

In contrast to the costly programs in other countries, the Cuban MBA is free for students, with the costs covered by the University and donations from businesses in Murcia.

According to Wandosell, the Spaniards are taking care of the instructors' salaries and travel expenses, while the Church "supplies the buildings and coordinates with local instructors," as their director, father Yosvani Carvajal, said.

It isn't the first program of its type attempted Cuba. The Argentinian Business School ADEN tried it first, and was followed by a series of other high-profile trials and failures.

The innovation in the UCAM program is that it is the only one directed exclusively towards entrepreneurs and sole proprietors. That is not the case at the MBA program at the University of Havana, where students must be employed by an official state business to be accepted. (See "Cuba's Big Layoffs: What to Do with the Unemployed?")

Not Recognized at Home
Majel Reyes Quesada, an MBA student with a Bachelor's degree in English, said he had practical reasons for wanting to do the program. "I see myself doing something in the future, with the possible new economic opening," he said. "Maybe I'll create a small business."

This is a typical student profile, and it can explain the pragmatic character of the curriculum. "In Spain we would call it professional master's degree," explains Wandosell. "It offers advanced training in business management, but is very orientated toward small and very small businesses and cooperatives, which are the type of enterprises that are being started in Cuba."

In spite of the recent reforms, there are still substantial obstacles for potential entrepreneurs on the island nation. On the one hand, the list of authorized activities precludes Cubans from opening businesses likely to grow large. For example, a book-repair shop is ok, but a publishing house is not. An artisan bricklayer can open his or her own business, but not a construction company. No such company can open while Cuba's constitution specifies that "the economic system is based on socialist principles." (See "Cuba?s Communist Codgers Keep Control.")

In addition, there is no credit or micro-credit system. Without any access to start-up funds, entrepreneurship opportunities remain limited; and finding funding can be a major obstacle even for people with family abroad. And although the Communist Party passed a resolution during their most recent congress to liberalize the wholesale markets, the reforms have yet to be implemented.

Is this the back door to Cuba's capitalist tradition? Father Carvajal offers the Church's non-ideological position: "It is for Cuba's benefit. The graduates are for Cuba."

At the end of their program, the MBA students will have a degree recognized in the European Union, but not in their own country. The Education Ministry will not officially sanction the program until it is paired with a Cuban university.

(AP) ? Three security contractors including two Americans were released by Iraqi army forces Tuesday after they were held for more than two weeks, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security announced as he demanded a full report on the episode.

Republican Rep. Peter King of New York identified the men as Army veteran Alex Antiohos of West Babylon, New York, National Guardsman Jonas March of Savannah, Georgia, and Kevin Fisher of Fiji.

King said they were working for a security firm when Iraqi Ministry of Defense officials rejected paperwork prepared on their behalf by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and began holding them on Dec. 9.

The men weren't charged with any crimes and King said it appeared that they were not injured.

He said Antiohos, who lives on Long Island, spoke to his wife Tuesday evening, and he was expected to be home later this week.

"She said he seems to be doing well," he said.

King said they were released after efforts by his office, the State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the Defense Department and the White House.

He said he will demand answers from the Iraqis as well from U.S. authorities about how the incident was handled after they learned about the men.

"We're going to have thousands of contractors over there, including many Americans. Can the Iraqis just take them off the street and hold them? This is a terrible precedent. We have to get to the bottom of this," he said.

The New York congressman said he was concerned that U.S. military authorities had not been notified by the U.S. Embassy that the men were being held and that embassy representatives had not visited the men when he learned about it from Antiohos' wife last week.

"We have to find out if there could have been better coordination between all the agencies to make sure something like this doesn't happen again," King said.

U.S. troops completed a full withdrawal from Iraq this month after nearly nine years of war.

"This should be a bit of a wake-up call as to whether the situation really is deteriorating in Iraq," he added. "Iraq was supposed to be an ally. We liberated Iraq. Yet they hold these men for 18 days. ... It's inexcusable that they were treated this way by a supposed ally."

Lakers rout Jazz, easily avoid 0-3 season start (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? After finishing three games in roughly 56 hours with their best effort yet, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers demonstrated why their demise might not be as imminent as many thought.

Bryant scored 26 points, Pau Gasol added 22 points and nine rebounds, and the Lakers avoided just the fourth 0-3 start in franchise history with a 96-71 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.

Metta World Peace scored 14 points for the Lakers, who had much more life than the Jazz despite playing their third game in three nights to open the season. Los Angeles ran away with a dominant third quarter, making a 27-8 surge out of halftime in the club's first win for coach Mike Brown.

After a tumultuous preseason under a new coaching staff, several injuries and the NBA's only three-games-in-three-nights start, the Lakers realize they're still lacking a consistent identity and a thorough knowledge of Brown's game plan. At least a blowout win over the Jazz allowed them to enjoy their first day off since training camp began.

"We're a very active team," Bryant said. "This is a blue-collar team. We're a scrappy bunch. You saw that. We're going to fight and scratch and claw for everything, as it should be. That'll get us by."

With a Christmas loss to the Chicago Bulls and another defeat in Sacramento one night later, the Lakers got off to their first 0-2 start since the 2002-03 season. But Los Angeles has started 0-3 just three times in franchise history ? just once in the last 50 years (1978-79).

Utah missed 17 of its first 19 shots in the second quarter while the Lakers made a 13-0 run capped by a one-handed dunk by World Peace, the normally ground-bound leader of Los Angeles' second unit. Los Angeles blew out the Jazz after halftime, jumping to a 68-39 lead with a 12-2 run.

"To hold a team to 32 percent and 71 points in an NBA game, I don't care who you're playing, you're doing something right on that end of the floor," Brown said. "The focus, the energy, the effort, that communication and trust that we brought defensively, was exciting to see."

The Lakers comprehensively shut down the Jazz, the last NBA team to open its regular season. Paul Millsap had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Utah, but coach Tyrone Corbin scowled throughout the lowest-scoring performance in an opener in franchise history.

"They're a veteran team, they have a lot of pride, and they have some great players in that locker room," Corbin said. "I told our guys before the game, `If you expect them to come out and lay down because they're playing there games in three nights, you're mistaken.' They wanted to get the monkey off their back as soon as they could, and they played like it."

In the Jazz's first season opener without coach Jerry Sloan running their bench since 1988, Utah made just 20 shots in the first three quarters and shot 20 fewer free throws than the Lakers. Al Jefferson went 2 for 16, C.J. Miles was 1 for 8, and rookie Enes Kanter was 1 for 7 in his NBA debut.

At least Utah's 25-point loss was one point better than the biggest blowout loss in Utah opener history.

"It didn't seem like much was working for us," said Utah forward Gordon Hayward, who had seven points. "It felt like we were a little stagnant, just standing around and watching a little bit. They kind of blew it open in the third quarter, and we can't allow that to happen. But it's just one game. We just need to be more confident shooters."

The Lakers got their only back-to-back-to-back series of games out of the way immediately, although they still won't even get consecutive days off until mid-January. When the New York Knicks visit Staples Center on Thursday night, Los Angeles still will be without starting center Andrew Bynum, who will finish his four-game suspension for misbehavior in last spring's playoffs.

The Lakers already are hurting this season, with Bryant nursing a torn ligament in his right wrist and Gasol wearing extra support for his sprained right shoulder. Veteran Matt Barnes, who's dealing with bursitis in his left hip, didn't play for the second time in three games despite a loud fan chant for him in the fourth quarter.

Millsap came off the Utah bench, playing through tendinitis in his right quadriceps that nearly kept him out of uniform. Jazz newcomer Josh Howard had 10 points in 24 minutes.

NOTES: Corbin waited until right before game time to rule in Millsap, the Jazz's sturdy power forward. Millsap was a reserve for most of his first four NBA seasons, but started all 76 games in which he appeared last season. ... Lakers F Troy Murphy fouled out in 32 scoreless minutes, but he also had 11 rebounds and four assists. ... Utah plays five games in the next seven days, including a one-day trip to San Antonio. The Lakers have four games in the next seven days.

Capsule review of new film release (AP)

"The Iron Lady" ? The same problems that plagued "La Vie en Rose," starring Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf, exist in this biopic of Margaret Thatcher, with Meryl Streep playing the former British prime minister. While both films feature strong performances from strong actresses playing strong, real-life women, the scripts are weakened by going strictly by the numbers. Sure, Streep reliably nails her impression of Thatcher ? the hair, the voice, the steely demeanor. The way she dresses down her deputy during a crowded cabinet meeting is just withering. But the film from Phyllida Lloyd (who directed Streep in the ABBA musical "Mamma Mia!"), from a script by Abi Morgan, reduces this high-profile life to a greatest-hits collection of historic moments. Here's Thatcher's first election to public office; there's her ascension to the prime minister's post, the first (and, so far, only) time a woman achieved that rank. Here's the Falkland Islands conflict, there's the Berlin Wall coming down. Through it all, her beloved husband, Denis (Jim Broadbent), stood by her side until ? and after ? his death. One of the more facile and predictable narrative devices in "The Iron Lady" features an aged, fragile Thatcher seemingly talking to herself when in reality she's speaking to her deceased husband, a symptom of the dementia that's gnawing at her once-formidable brain. This inevitably sets up a flashback to one of the aforementioned historical events. You just know that if Thatcher is by herself in her lonely, empty home, Broadbent will pop up to amuse and cajole her. It happens so often you can predict it, which erodes its emotional impact. PG-13 for some violent images and brief nudity. 105 min. Two stars out of four.

T-Platforms to build ten petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University

In post-Soviet Russia, massive supercomputer programs you. (Sorry, we had to.) Recently, Russia?s Moscow State University contracted with high-performance computing company T-Platforms to create a ten petaflop cluster that?ll be operational in 2013. The computer would fall just short of the fastest supercomputer on Earth (the Japanese K Computer, which is rated at 10.51 petaflops) and will incorporate a mixture of different node types to achieve the ten petaflops. T-Platforms will reportedly build the nodes from Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge Xeon processors and NVIDIA?s next-generation Kepler GPU coprocessors, and Intel?s Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture could also be included if it?s available during construction. The reason for the project? Unknown officially, but we?re guessing it?s just another reason for Putin to rip his shirt off and celebrate.

The rumors for the next Apple product have already started and this one states that Apple might be readying the iPad 3 for a launch on Steve Jobs? birthday.

According to a Chinese newspaper, the company is reportedly set on launching its new tablet, the iPad 3 on February 24th which happens to be the birthday of Apple founder and late CEO Steve Jobs.

But Apple do to usually go hunting for special dates to launch their products, instead they believe that launching their products would make their products special and it is highly unlikely that they will announce the product unless its completely ready.

So we can?t be sure right now if the launch would indeed take place on February 24th but we can be sure that it?ll be a great tribute to Steve Jobs if it does.

China Petrochemical Corp. Completes Purchase of Daylight Energy

December 25, 2011, 8:58 PM EST

By Benjamin Haas

Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- China Petrochemical Corp., the nation?s biggest oil refiner, completed the purchase of Canada?s Daylight Energy Ltd. for about C$2.2 billion ($2.16 billion), the company said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

Sinopec, as the Chinese company is known, said it paid C$10.08 a share in cash for Calgary-based Daylight.

Cong Peixin, a spokesman for the China Petrochemical unit that carried out the transaction, declined to elaborate on the statement. Daylight confirmed the completed sale in a statement released yesterday.

The purchase gives the Beijing-based company access to more than 300,000 acres of land in areas rich with oil and natural gas, after falling crude prices made valuations attractive.

Sinopec Group, China National Petroleum Corp. and Cnooc Ltd. are seeking to gain technology through partnerships in order to develop China?s shale-gas reserves, estimated to be larger than those in the U.S.

China, the world?s biggest energy consumer, has partnered with Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Chevron Corp. to explore possible shale wells.

Chinese companies have announced $18.3 billion worth of bids this year for overseas oil and gas exploration and production companies, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Cnooc bought Canada?s Opti Canada Inc. in November for $34 million in cash, agreeing to take on $2.4 billion in debt.

Daylight?s proven and probable reserves rose 46 percent to the equivalent of 174 million barrels of oil at the end of 2010, the company said March 1. The company?s production was 35 million barrels in the third quarter, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Eugene, Ore., Mayor Kitty Piercy have made a friendly wager on the Rose Bowl that will make either community a winner pending the outcome of the Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks match up.

"We wanted to develop a wager that could benefit our entire community and particularly those most in need," Soglin said in a news release.

Each mayor has committed to privately raising $500 if their team loses. The money will then be used for tools for Habitat for Humanity organizations in either Madison or Eugene.

"Each of us will raise the money privately and no city funds are involved," Soglin said. "This is a great program and we both want to support it."

Both mayors said they are aware of the growing need for shelters and services for the homeless. They each credit Habitat for Humanity for the work it is doing. But each also is rooting on their favorite teams in the Rose Bowl.

"I am looking forward to our local workers benefiting from new tools because I truly expect our Badgers to win," Soglin said.

Piercy replied, "In your dreams Mayor Soglin, but seriously, whoever benefits from this wager serves those in need in our country and that?s what it?s all about."

The Badgers and the Ducks kick off the 2012 Rose Bowl on Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.

Repurpose an Ikea Laptop Surface into a Music Stand [Ikea Hacks]

If you already own a camera tripod and need a music stand you can save a lot of money by adapting a $2.49 Ikea Brada laptop surface to fit the tripod.

Repurpose an Ikea Laptop Surface into a Music StandTo make the laptop stand fit the tripod you'll need to purchase a metal nut that can fit the bolt on your tripod. Attach this nut to the stand, and now your tripod can also serve as a music stand and a portable laptop stand. With a pivoting camera tripod it should be much more adjustable than the average music stand.

Weekly US oil and gas rig count down by 11 (AP)

HOUSTON ? The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. decreased by 11 this week to 2,008.

Houston-based drilling product provider Baker Hughes Inc. reported Thursday that 1,201 rigs were exploring for oil and 802 for natural gas. Five were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago this week Baker Hughes reported 1,714 active rigs.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, New Mexico added four rigs, Wyoming added three and Texas added one.

North Dakota lost seven rigs, Colorado, Louisiana and Oklahoma each lost three and Alaska, Arkansas, Pennsylvania and West Virginia each lost one. California was unchanged.

The rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. A low of 488 was recorded in 1999.

The weekly report, normally released Fridays, moved early because of Christmas.

Gingrich booted from Virginia ballot (Politico)

Newt Gingrich failed to make the primary ballot in Virginia after a weeklong scramble by the former House speaker?s campaign to gather sufficient signatures.

?After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary,? the Republican Party of Virginia wrote on its official Twitter account early Saturday morning.

The party announced Friday evening that Rick Perry had failed to meet the qualifications as well. That leaves the race in the state between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. Other candidates did not submit signatures.

And the Gingrich campaign?s response ? that it would mount a write-in campaign ? won?t solve the problem.

?Gingrich cannot have voters write in, because Va. Code section 24.2-529 prohibits write-in ballots in primary elections,? Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, explained via email.

Gingrich?s campaign director Michael Krull pledged a fight Saturday.

?Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot. Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates,? Krull?s statement read. ?We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice.?

The Virginia primary isn?t until March 6 ? Super Tuesday ? but the effort to get on the ballot was seen as a test of Gingrich?s organizational ability, which has been in doubt despite his burst in the polls.

Gingrich himself trumped up the stakes Wednesday night, after pulling away from early state campaigning to shore up the effort.

?Once again in Virginia we?re going to disappoint the Republican establishment, because tomorrow in Richmond, we?re going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need,? Gingrich told about 200 people.

The next day, he did two events in Richmond ? one hosted by the Republican Party of Virginia that drew a crowd, and another ?Virginians with Newt? rally that drew only 35 people.

The failure could prove significant if there is the protracted primary fight Romney predicted to POLITICO earlier this month, which would enable the former Massachusetts governor to capitalize on his better-organized operation to hold off Gingrich.

It also saps Gingrich of one of the states where his numbers were highest. In a Public Policy Polling survey earlier this month, Gingrich had a strong lead in the Virginia primary, receiving 41 percent of the support with Romney in second with 15 percent. A Dec. 21 Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans found a closer margin, with Gingrich leading Romney 30 to 25 percent.

This is the second primary ballot Gingrich has failed to make. He missed a deadline in Missouri last month to appear in their primary vote. He struggled to get on the ballot in Ohio.

Gingrich, who lives in the Washington suburb of McLean, had put in a last-minute effort to get on the ballot, paying contractors more than $1.50 per signature collected.

Gingrich submitted about 11,000 signatures. The party was required to review each one and to ensure they had at least 10,000 were from valid registered voters.

Romney and Paul submitted 15,000 signatures, preempting the signature-by-signature review process.

There are 49 delegates at stake in the Virginia primary.

James Hohmann contributed to this report.

Video: New rules to prevent pilot fatigue

>> to prevent pilot fatigue in the cockpit have been in the works for some time. today the faa made them official. the regulations date back to the '60s. this comes nearly three years after that deadly commuter plane crash in buffalo where 50 people were killed. a federal investigation found that the regional airliner 's pilot and co-pilot were flying while fatigued. tom costello covers the aviation business and there has been some pushback against these rules that are now official.

>> the airlines themselves felt that the new rules might be too expensive. they're reserving judgment at the moment saying they want to study what the new rules are. the cargo airlines have also said they're going to be too expensive as well. the bottom line as you stated, the whole point of this is to address issues that came up as a result of that crash outside of buffalo. while pilot error was cited as the reason for that crash, as you mentioned, pilot fatigue, long distance commuting, incredibly long and exhausting work hours were all discussed during this investigation. these are decades old issues. so here now are the new rules that the faa has acknowledged going into effect. they don't go into effect two years. to begin, flight time must be limited to eight or nine hours. that depends on what time the pilot takes off and where they're going. multiple time zones , that kind of thing. ten-hour maximum rest period. it used to be eight hours. and you had to find time to sleep in that period. now it's ten hours with an opportunity for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. you can imagine what that means if you're in an overnight in a hotel somewhere. 30 consecutive hours free from duty every week. consecutive hours is critical there. and pilots now, this is important. pilots must affirm that they are fit for duty at the beginning of their shift. in other words, if you did commute cross country , it is up to you to make sure that you got the sleep before you report for duty. you can't just come across country and then suddenly jump into this cockpit of a plane and expect that you're going to be fit for duty if you're exhausted and you're fighting a cold which is what happened, of course, in the case of that buffalo crash. but, and this is important now. the cargo airlines said this is all way too expensive for us. we can't do this. we fly multiple time zones . we take off at night. they argued that we can't have these rules apply to us. the faa agreed. cargo airlines are exempt. today i asked the d.o.t. secretary, the secretary of the transportation department whether pilot's lives are any less important than airline pilots lives.

>> every life is important. safety is our number one priority. we have an obligation when these rules are developed to make sure that they can meet a cost effective formula, and so we will meet with our friends in the cargo industry and we will explain what this rule does and we will explain the safety aspects of it. and we will encourage them to adopt this.

>> so there you go. mr. ray lahood , the secretary of transportation arguing the cargo airline pilots' lives are important as airline pilot ' lives and he will try to get the ceos to go along willingly. they've fought this all the way. nonetheless, a pretty big change for the nation's airlines as a whole. back to

Insight: How renewable energy may be Edison's revenge (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? At the start of the 20th century, inventors Thomas Alva Edison and Nikola Tesla clashed in the "war of the currents." To highlight the dangers of his rival's system, Edison even electrocuted an elephant. The animal died in vain; it was Tesla's system and not Edison's that took off. But today, helped by technological advances and the need to conserve energy, Edison may finally get his revenge.

The American inventor, who made the incandescent light bulb viable for the mass market, also built the world's first electrical distribution system, in New York, using "direct current" electricity. DC's disadvantage was that it couldn't carry power beyond a few blocks. His Serbian-born rival Tesla, who at one stage worked with Edison, figured out how to send "alternating current" through transformers to enable it to step up the voltage for transmission over longer distances.

Edison was a fiercely competitive businessman. Besides staging electrocutions of animals to discredit Tesla's competing system, he proposed AC be used to power the first execution by electric chair.

But his system was less scalable, and it was to prove one of the worst investments made by financier J. Pierpont Morgan. New York's dominant banker installed it in his Madison Avenue home in the late 19th century, only to find it hard to control. It singed his carpets and tapestries.

So from the late 1800s, AC became the accepted form to carry electricity in mains systems. For most of the last century, the power that has reached the sockets in our homes and businesses is alternating current.

Now DC is making a comeback, becoming a promising money-spinner in renewable or high-security energy projects. From data centers to long-distance power lines and backup power supplies, direct current is proving useful in thousands of projects worldwide.

"Everyone says it's going to take at least 50 years," says Peter Asmus, a senior analyst at Boulder, Colorado-based Pike Research, a market research and consulting firm in global clean technology. But "the role of DC will increase, and AC will decrease."

FROM CLOUD TO MICROGRID

The main factor driving demand is the need to conserve energy and produce more of it from renewable sources. Alternating current is generated by rotating engines, but renewable sources such as wind and solar produce DC power. To use it, because of the way our buildings are wired, we first convert it to AC.

Another thing that's happened since Edison's time is the advent of the semiconductor. Semiconductors need DC power, and are increasingly found in household appliances. These have to convert the AC supply back to DC, which is a waste of energy and generates heat. In the early years of industrialization this wasn't an issue, but today it's important, especially in the huge and fast-growing business of cloud computing.

The companies that handle our information traffic are racking their brains to boost efficiency and cut carbon emissions from their plants. Pike Research expects the green data center business to be worth $41 billion annually by 2015, up from $7.5 billion now. That will be just under a third of all spending on data centers.

Finnish information technology company Academica, for instance, has a data center in a granite cave beneath Helsinki's Uspenski cathedral. It uses Baltic sea water to cool the plant and feeds surplus heat to the city's homes. IBM has designed a solar array to power its Bangalore data center. Microsoft has filed a patent application for a wind-powered data center.

Direct current may be one way to increase efficiency and reduce emissions. Right now, outside a handful of universities, it's not the first thing people are thinking of because there are more basic things to do, says Eric Woods, Research Director for Smart Industry at Pike. But for companies on the leading edge, "it's sort of coming out of the research ghetto."

Pike has not put a figure on how big the DC component of the green data center market will be. Swiss-Swedish engineering firm ABB, a big DC advocate, says about 35 percent of demand for green data centers will come from the United States, 30 percent from Europe, and the rest spread globally.

Every day, says ABB, we all send more than 300 billion emails and 250 million tweets globally. The centers to handle all this data are growing by 10 percent each year and already consume 80 million megawatt-hours of energy annually -- almost 1.5 times the amount of electricity used by the whole of New York City. They're also responsible for about 2 percent of global carbon emissions.

DC power could help. At low voltages it has long been used in data centers but will be "game-changing" at higher voltages, ABB says.

Beyond its potential in data centers, DC power's ability to run on renewable energy sources makes it interesting for important plants that need to operate in "island mode" -- independent of the grid -- in case of a supply failure. Building systems with small, self-contained electricity distribution networks known as microgrids is of particular interest to governments and militaries who worry about terrorist attacks.

"In our view the market (for microgrids) is about to take off," said Pike Research's Asmus, who also sees demand for microgrids in countries that aren't densely covered by AC grids, such as Australia and India, and in developing countries looking to replace costly and wasteful diesel generators.

SMART GRIDS

And it's not just "island mode." Thanks to power electronics - semiconductor switching devices - DC can now be transmitted at high voltage over very long distances, longer than AC. It can be easily used in cables, over ground or under the sea.

High voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are the backbone of plans for smart grids, or supergrids, which aim to channel energy from places where power sources such as sunlight and hydropower are abundant to countries where it is scarce.

Siemens, which vies with ABB for market leadership in HVDC transmission, says demand is increasing fast. "By 2020, I'm expecting to see new HVDC transmission lines with a total capacity of 250 gigawatts. That is a dramatic increase," says Udo Niehage, CEO of the Power Transmission Division in Siemens' Energy Sector. "In the last 40 years, we've only installed 100 gigawatts worth of HVDC transmission lines."

Emerging markets have been the main drivers. ABB has installed a 2,000-km line in China that operates DC power; a 2,375-km HVDC project under construction in Brazil will be the world's longest transmission line when it comes online in 2013.

But Europe is also important. HVDC is now used in a power connection between Britain and the Netherlands. The island of Majorca, whose tourists push up power demand every summer, was hooked up to the Spanish mainland in September. The HVDC system can transmit 30 to 40 percent more energy than with conventional overhead lines carrying alternating current.

Jochen Kreusel, the head of ABB's Smart Grid program, says smart grid demand will put Europe at the forefront of HVDC growth over the next 10 years. "At the moment, based on the number of projects, I'm quite sure it's the strongest market," he said. Pike in November 2010 estimated HVDC investment would reach $12.1 billion by 2015.

The bulk of this DC know-how is currently with European companies, although Chinese firms are joining in. Besides ABB, Siemens and France's Alstom are the main players.

NOT THERE YET

There are plenty of obstacles to all these developments. People in some places worry about the environmental damage from laying new grids, others point to a lack of standards and say DC still has technological limitations that need to be fixed.

Public fears about the potential danger of high voltage cables could also be an issue, especially in the United States where standard voltages are already much lower than in Europe. There are practical limitations, such as a shortage of cable-making capacity.

If the economic climate does not improve, cash may also be a constraint. Countries such as Spain and the Netherlands have already cut subsidies to renewable energy projects. ABB's Kreusel says the economic crisis will have an impact on the market, but he still expects DC to become "an evolutionary add-on" to AC grids over the next 20 years.

How would Edison see all this? He might even have foreseen it. "I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy," he reportedly told his associates Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone in the 1930s. "What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."

CA startup sees entrepreneur-ship as visa solution (AP)

SUNNYVALE, Calif. ? You've heard of tech companies starting in a Silicon Valley garage. What about on a ship?

That's the idea being floated by a California startup that wants to dock a vessel off the coast to house foreign entrepreneurs who have dreams of creating the next Google but can't get visas to work in the United States.

Sunnyvale-based Blueseed Co. says current immigration rules can sink promising ventures and torpedo innovation and job creation.

The ship aims to provide a remedy by giving foreign entrepreneurs a place to build their companies only a short boat ride from high tech's hub.

"A lot of people say, `I'd like to go to Silicon Valley' but there is no way for them to do it," said Max Marty, Blueseed CEO and co-founder.

Marty, the son of Cuban immigrants, thought of the ship after listening to international classmates of his at the University of Miami business school lament about having to leave the U.S. after graduation.

Politicians have wrangled with the issue, but efforts to change the system have stalled.

Last July, President Barack Obama said during a Twitter town hall he wanted to make sure talented people who studied in the U.S. were able to stay to create jobs.

"We don't want to pay for training them here and then having them benefit other countries," Obama said.

A bill to address so-called brain-drain was reintroduced this year by Sens. Mark Udall, D-Colo., John Kerry, D-Mass., and Richard Lugar, R-Ind. The Startup Visa Act would allow immigrant entrepreneurs and foreign graduates from U.S. universities to appeal for a two-year visa "on condition that they secure financing from a qualified U.S. investor and can demonstrate the ability to create American jobs."

But Blueseed founders don't expect any real reform from a bitterly divided Congress during an election year.

"Our solution is an entrepreneurial solution," said Dario Mutabdzija, Blueseed's president.

From cruise ships to oil rigs to military aircraft carriers, there are several examples of individuals living and working on ships. This one would accommodate about 1,000 people and be docked 12 miles southwest of San Francisco Bay, in international waters.

It would be registered in a country with a reputable legal system, maybe the Bahamas or the Marshall Islands, Marty said. Residents would be subject to the laws of that nation.

Residents would be ferried ashore with temporary business or tourist visas, which are easier to get, to meet with investors, collaborators, partners and others. Mutabdzija said the ability to have face-to-face meetings cannot be underestimated when trying to gain trust ? and secure funds ? from investors.

"Yes, we live in an interconnected age with Skype and other video conferencing. But if you want to grow a company, physical interactions are of paramount importance," Mutabdzija said. "We're a startup. We ran into this. Some people said if you're not within a 20 mile radius, we won't talk to you."

The proximity to high-tech's center, Silicon Valley, is also important.

"The talent, the money, the expertise and a cultural acceptance of risk. Elsewhere if it doesn't work out, you're a black sheep and the funds dry up," Mutabdzija said.

The ship would be a remodeled cruise ship or barge that Blueseed leases or owns. It would have all the high-tech amenities expected of a startup incubator and the look of employee-friendly Internet giants Facebook and Google, famous for their modern campuses complete with gourmet cafeterias, exercise facilities and an environmentally-sustainable design.

A live-work space would cost about $1,200 a month.

Logistical support, including food and other supplies, would come from local businesses along the coast, helping the economies of Half Moon Bay and San Francisco, though it hasn't been determined exactly which port Blueseed would use.

A helicopter also would be available for emergencies.

Critics deride the ship as a publicity stunt, and say investors would be better served contributing to ventures that help Americans create businesses.

"I would say the whole thing is a perfect metaphor for how in corporate America the practice to grow talent and incubate business locally is drifting away ? quite literally," said Bob Dane, of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which advocates for limited immigration.

But supporters of foreign entrepreneurship say immigrants are responsible for some of the most successful businesses in the world and if the U.S. doesn't try to attract them, others will.

"The ship may sound like a crazy idea but it illustrates how seriously flawed the immigration system here is," said John Feinblatt, who runs Partnership for a New American Economy, which advocates for immigration reform.

The organization published a report in June that said 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children.

Feinblatt said countries including Chile, Singapore and the United Kingdom have programs to attract immigrant entrepreneurs.

"While the U.S. is driving people away, other countries are welcoming them with open arms," he said. "If you miss out on them, you miss their talent, their ideas and ultimately the jobs that they create and the taxes that they pay."

Christopher S. Bentley, a spokesman with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said the agency has not seen the proposal and it's premature to comment.

Maritime experts say such an idea is feasible, but very costly.

"A good single point mooring costs in the millions of dollars but it could restrain a ship-shape vessel in quite severe storms and in deep water," said Bil Stewart, CEO of Houston-based Stewart Technology Associates, an engineering consultancy specializing in offshore and marine structures.

"But it would be prudent if the vessel had its own propulsion if you had a Pacific hurricane come along," Stewart added.

Blueseed's idea has started gaining steam.

Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal, announced he would lead Blueseed's financing search. Thiel has been a big supporter of "seasteads" ? self-ruling cities on the ocean ? and both Marty and Mutabdzija worked at the Seasteading Institute.

Blueseed wants to raise $10 million to $30 million over the next year and a half. The goal would be to launch in late 2013.

Christopher Hitchens dies at 62 (Politico)

WASHINGTON - Christopher Hitchens, the author, essayist and polemicist who waged verbal and occasional physical battle on behalf of causes left and right and wrote the provocative best-seller ?God is Not Great,? died Thursday night after a long battle with cancer. He was 62.

Hitchens' death was announced in a statement from Vanity Fair magazine. The statement says he died Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of his esophageal cancer.

?There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar,? said Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. ?Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls.?

A most engaged, prolific and public intellectual who enjoyed his drink (enough to ?to kill or stun the average mule?) and cigarettes, he announced in June 2010 that he was being treated for cancer of the esophagus and cancelled a tour for his memoir ?Hitch-22.?

Hitchens, a frequent television commentator and a contributor to Vanity Fair, Slate and other publications, had become a popular author in 2007 thanks to ?God is Not Great,? a manifesto for athiests that defied a recent trend of religious works. Cancer humbled, but did not mellow him. Even after his diagnosis, his columns appeared weekly, savaging the royal family or reveling in the death of Osama bin Laden.

?I love the imagery of struggle,? he wrote about his illness in an August 2010 essay in Vanity Fair. ?I sometimes wish I were suffering in a good cause, or risking my life for the good of others, instead of just being a gravely endangered patient.?

Eloquent and intemperate, bawdy and urbane, he was an acknowledged contrarian and contradiction - half-Christian, half-Jewish and fully non-believing; a native of England who settled in America; a former Trotskyite who backed the Iraq war and supported George W. Bush. But his passions remained constant and enemies of his youth, from Henry Kissinger to Mother Teresa, remained hated.

He was a militant humanist who believed in pluralism and racial justice and freedom of speech, big cities and fine art and the willingness to stand the consequences. He was smacked in the rear by then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and beaten up in Beirut. He once submitted to waterboarding to prove that it was indeed torture.

Hitchens was an old-fashioned sensualist who abstained from clean living as if it were just another kind of church. In 2005, he would recall a trip to Aspen, Colo., and a brief encounter after stepping off a ski lift.

?I was met by immaculate specimens of young American womanhood, holding silver trays and flashing perfect dentition,? he wrote.
